IV. Sisyphus and Jill

by Jeremy Wayne Couch

(In Hades, Sisyphus is condemned to try forever to roll a rock uphill which forever rolls back upon him.)

Sisyphus and Jill went up a hill
to play nurse and doctor
Jill changed her mind
and shoved Sis' from behind
and now he needs a chiropractor.

I have a clumsy heart
that keeps falling in love.
It's already too late
after the first date
for me to just walk away.

I wish my lips would hesitate
before saying,
"I love you."
But after just one kiss
there's nothing I won't promise
and few things I won't do.

I set myself up
to get knocked down
falling head-over-heels
like I'm doing cartwheels
that's how this feels.
