XIV. Orpheus

by Jeremy Wayne Couch

Go through the gate and look around
and return to tell me what you saw,
but do not tarry overlong
for time may move differently
on the other side,
and you may find
that I have joined you there
before you have returned to me.

I would go myself, instead of sending you,
but for fear that the gate would swing shut
behind me--imprisoning me
on that darker side.
I am not ready for eternity.
But you, who have always craved adventure,
what greater challenge is there than this?

Cross into that Great Unknown
and return to make in known to me,
so that I will know how best to prepare in life
for that which we will face--in death.
