XVII. Eros (Cupid)

by Jeremy Wayne Couch

(inspired by Sophie B. Hawkins)

Once I was alone and afraid
Then you sheltered me
Beneath your wing
You taught me how to sing
You gave me all for which I'd prayed
I thought Spring would stay forever

Winter came and you took flight
My summer sun gave way to night
I found myself alone again
Your memory, my only friend
Now I don't believe in prayers
or forever

I returned to the King of Clay
He's the one shaped me this way
He knew it was with you
I'd rather stay, but he held me anyway
If I'd let him, he'd hold on forever

I know you'll be back again
You'll tap at my window
I'll let you in and lie
Beneath your wings again
Even though I'll know
We're only pretending
it's forever
