Title: Secret Dangers (The Mission of Alex Kane #5) Author: John Preston Published by: Alyson Publications, 1986 ISBN: 0-932870-91-0 [trade paperback, 117 pages]
Who says heroes can't be gay?Nobody ever heard of Lichtburg until a hijacking there endangered hundreds of people -- including a gay tourist group from North Dakota. That was only the first of many attacks on gay people planned by right-wing terrorists. It was time for Alex Kane.
Alex Kane: a gay hero in the tradition of the Destroyer and the Executioner. His only goal is justice for gay people. His only weakness is for other men.
"Alex, look!"
Danny didn't wait for an answer. He was racing at top speed across the grass. A park employee was yelling at him to use the sidewalk, but he wasn't paying any attention to those kinds of rules today.
Alex saw what had caught Danny's eye. Four men had been standing near the entrance of Philadelphia's Independence Hall. Their body posture and their air of conspiracy made them stand out from the crowd of pleasantly chatting tourists. They were deadly serious about something and that something had little to do with American history.
Alex threw down his satchel and pulled out the parts of his machine gun. He began to run after Danny as soon as it was ready.
Alex sped up, pushing himself as fast as he could. He didn't dare let many civilians get between himself and the group of men he'd seen. Just then, there was a blur in the air. It rose at least eight feet up. It was spinning so fast that there was only a hint that it might be a human form. It was catapulting towards the suspicious men.
The missile landed; its shape was suddenly recognizable as it arrived at it destination in a sweeping motion, feet first, no longer tumbling. Danny. Each of the two feet landed squarely on the backs of the necks of two of the men. They cushioned his fall, taking most of the force of the impact themselves, leaving them unconscious and sprawled on the ground.
Each of the books in this series focuses on a different segment or aspect of the gay population or is triggered off of a real-life incident. The story line in Secret Dangers focuses on gay couples of different racial backgrounds and the additional pressures they face in our society. - Jay
