Title: Golden Years (The Mission of Alex Kane #2) Author: John Preston Published by: Alyson Publications, 1984 ISBN: 0-932870-65-1 [trade paperback, 123 pages]
Who says heroes can't be gay?Joe Talbot was growing old; sometimes, he even felt old. Now he was looking forward to a carefree retirement on the money he had saved. But somebody wanted to take that away from him. Somebody wanted to prey on the dreams of older gay men. Somebody had never heard of Alex Kane.
Alex Kane: a gay hero in the tradition of the Destroyer and the Executioner. His only goal is justice for gay people. His only weakness is for other men.
Frank Matson was busy counting the night's collection. What a piece of cake! Who would have thought it could be so easy to get money out of those fools?
Why did all those other preachers worry about theology, when their congregations didn't give a damn? They just wanted to be shocked. All Matson had to do was read the National Enquirer every day and he had a ready-made sermon to use. His favorite tactic was to decry the homosexual conspiracy to corrupt youth; that always made the collection plates overflow. Money really does grow on trees, thought Frank, and he laughed to himself.
In his own way, Frank's visitor must have agreed. Frank didn't notice him until the man in the doorway delivered his own judgment of Frank's real purpose in life: "You pimp."
Frank looked up, shocked. "Who are you? How did you get by the guards?" he demanded. "I have a detail of armed men out there."
The intruder was amused. "Let's just say they're asleep -- for a long, long time. They weren't very good, you know. The Klan may talk a good line, but they sure don't know how to fight." He smiled again.
Frank Matson had finally net Alex Kane. Like for many others, it was a meeting he would long remember.
Each of the books in this series focuses on a different segment or aspect of the gay population or is triggered off of a real-life incident. The story line in Golden Years focuses on senior gays and the additional pressures they face in our society. - Jay
