Scotty MacKay is a left-handed fastballer for the Washington Senators who can't decide whether the Jefferson Memorial looks more like a baseball or a breast. An avid reader of Proust and Sports Illustrated, and a former Cy Young Award winner, Scotty is now thirty-six years old. His fastball isn't so hot anymore, his team is in last place, and his girlfriend is playing a pitcher of Kool-Aid on a TV commercial.

Faced with what looks like a premature end to an All-Star career, Scotty is convinced by Buddy Budlong, his catcher and best friend, to gamble on a comeback by developing a curveball. Stage fright notwithstanding, all appears well -- until Buddy breaks his arm and is knocked out of commission for the remainder of the season. Scotty then finds himself teamed with a former rival, ex-Cleveland catcher Jason Cornell, whom he detests. Jason is twenty-eight. He has lots of teeth and poses for underwear ads. Also, his eyes are blue. Scotty's favorite color is blue. And by August, he has a major problem on his hands.

It could only happen in the American League.
