It hasn't been a very good day.

The high school principal is dead and teacher Tom Mason found the body. Since Tom had had an angry fight with the dead man not an hour before, the police now think he makes an excellent suspect. Adding to Tom's woes are an angry student and his family, the student claiming to have seen Tom near the scene of the murder at the time it happened. When Tom is later attacked and wounded by the same student, Tom begins to wonder what role the teenager might have played in the murder, not to mention the various faculty members who had ample reason to fear and hate the dead principal.

With very few allies and too many people to suspect, Tom turns to his lover, professional baseball player Scott Carpenter, for help in solving a most perplexing murder. A solution that is pressing since it's the only way to prove his own innocence.
