High school teacher Tom Mason has had a difficult summer. After his lover, professional baseball player Scott Carpenter, came out publicly, their lives became a whirl of being hounded by the media and anonymous death threats. Now, with this most unrestful summer winding down, it is time for Tom to face perhaps his biggest challenge - the beginning of yet another school year. But the controversy that surrounded him all summer is coming back to school as well. A group of conservative parents have been trying to whip the PTA into a frenzy over the "gay teachers in the school system" and are trying to use the upcoming elections to take control of the PTA. With the community polarizing into two opposing camps, it is no surprise that fights erupt during the election night meeting. But no one expects murder.
When a prominent member of the conservative group is found murdered in the school library, one of Tom's closest friends and allies is arrested for the crime. Sure that she is innocent and that the police aren't doing enough to find the real killer, Tom decides to do a bit of snooping himself. But nothing is more draconian than school politics, and soon Tom finds himself facing death threats once again. Now he has to discover the truth behind the murder, not only to aid his friend but possibly to save his own life.
