Title: Jack and Jim - A Personal Journal of the 70's Author: Jim Brogan Published by: Equanimity Press, 1982 ISBN: 0-941362-00-0 [trade paperback, 173 pages]
I want to show the evolution of a happy relationship. Gay men, hopefully will be particularly encouraged by what's here, but it's meant for everyone. - Jim BroganJim Brogan was an English professor at San Francisco State in the 1970's. He was also a gay man in search of a lover and himself. He kept a diary, which he edited into this readable narrative.
The book begins in 1970 prior to meeting Jack. Jim is in therapy about his need for love and his functioning as a gay man. Jim pursues the psycho-babble of the 1970's as a means to grow, to interpret himself, and to help his friends. Jack and Jim meet, negotiate an open relationship, have a variety of secondary relationships, and juggle differences in age and income, while living in hippy and psychedelic San Francisco.
This is a period piece, which reveals gay life is not necessarily easy or carefree, and that happiness can come from self-knowledge and sharing. - Texas FitzGerald
