Title: Homosexuals Anonymous - A Psychoanalytic and Theological Analysis of Colin Cook and His Cure for Homosexuality Author: Arthur Frederick Ide Published by: Tangelwuld Press, 1987 ISBN: 0-934667-06-3 [trade paperback, 76 pages]
This book will live long after its players are dead. It is a true story - and a startling analysis of fraud, misrepresentation, guile and deceit. This is the story of Colin Cook, who as a teenager discovered Christian fundamentalism, was troubled by a too-distant father, and wrestled with feelings that would ultimately lead him into the gay underworld. The conflict of his homosexuality and religious beliefs led Cook into Seventh Day Adventist ministry. His homosexuality took him out of the pulpit and into the streets. Agonizing over his gay identity, Cook resolved to cure himself of what he saw was a physical and spiritual disease.
Renouncing homosexuality, Cook married and ultimately fathered two boys. Determined to help others escape "the curse of homosexuality," Cook co-founded Quest Learning Center - where gay men and women were supposed to find release from "their affliction" of homosexuality. As their numbers increased, Homosexuals Anonymous came into its own and Cook began to publicly lecture on how Christians could overcome homosexuality.
But what actually happened at Quest Learning Center did not follow the program Cook established to help gays leave the gay world. What did happen is chronicled in this unique volume that not only details Cook's experience, but also looks at the psychology and theology of Cook in relationship to current thought, research and scholarship.
The author, Dr. Arthur Frederick Ide, has written numerous books on the charade of alleged religious leaders in the Christian fundamentalist movement - from Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson to James Robison, W.A. Criswell and others. Homosexuals Anonymous is Ide's first full-length psychoanalysis of a message of hate and fear given the guise of religious authority and religious psychology.
