Outlook is the quarterly newsletter published by NGALE, Inc. It has been published since the winter
of 1995, with a break from spring to fall 1997. Outlook serves as a forum for editorial
commentary and a resource for listings of current community events. It's also a showcase for
drawing, poetry, humour, and short fiction along with book, music, arts, and website reviews.
Each issue contains information on NGALE, its activities, and meeting times for those
interested in joining the group. Advertising from local gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses,
along with public service announcements and classified word ads round out the content.
Typical productions runs are about 200 copies per issue, mostly distributed at several
downtown businesses, with some copies mailed to subscribers and distribution points across
the province. There is no cover charge, with paper and duplication costs covered through
donations paid for commercial advertisements. Postal delivery is also available for a small
donation. Outlook has been issued the official
International Standard Serial Number
1480-350X by the National Library of Canada,
and copies of Outlook are kept on file there in the
Legal Deposit collection.
Recent Issues On-Line
Note: Viewing the on-line issues with a web browser requires the Adobe Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) viewer/plug-in
which can be downloaded for free from here.
Minor layout changes from the printed editions (such as an icrease in page size) are required in order to convert issues
into PDF format. Some cropping may also occur near page edges. Files are typically around 1 Mb in size,
and will take several minutes to download via modem, especially when GeoCities is busy.
If you have difficulty viewing issues on-line, try downloading them to your hard drive (by right-mouse-clicking
on the link and saving), and then manually loading the files into the Acrobat viewer program.
Discount coupons are valid in original printed issues only. Outlook content is copyright ©1997-1998 by Newfoundland
Gays And Lesbians for Equality, Inc. Written permission required for re-use.
Back issues are also available via e-mail upon request.
See the Pride Guide for more information on
finding these locations. Delivery by mail can also be arranged.
How to Submit
Text may be submitted in the following ways:
- On PC-format floppy diskette (3" or 5"). Most popular file formats can
be used, including Word Perfect, Microsoft Word, Write, raw ASCII text, etc. Please
use descriptive filename extensions (eg. WP, DOC, WRI, TXT, etc.).
- Via Internet e-mail to [email protected].
- On paper (preferably typed, or neatly handwritten).
Please use two spaces between sentences (after the period), and minimize the use of special
fonts or other formatting. Paragraphs should not be indented, but separated by a blank line.
Raw ASCII text should not contain line breaks, only carriage returns between paragraphs.
Double-check specific facts, direct quotes, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Artwork and photographs (up to 8 x 14", 22 x 36 cm in size) may also be submitted for
scanning, or on PC-format diskette in most common graphic file formats (eg. BMP,
PCX, GIF, JPG, etc.). Since Outlook is printed in black and white, artwork should have
good contrast in order to appear well when photocopied in shades of grey.
The following types of submissions are accepted:
- Editorials and commentaries
- Current events reports (upcoming and recently past)
- Activities of associated groups (eg. LBGT-MUN, youth group, PFLAG, NAN, etc.)
- Book, music, movie, arts, and website reviews
- Drawings, poetry, humour, and short fiction
- Proposals for ongoing columns will also be considered
All submissions must be accompanied by the author's name, address, and telephone number,
but these will be withheld from publication if requested. Not all submissions may be printed,
and we reserve the right to edit for length, profanity, grammar, punctuation, and for material
that is unfairly discriminatory or libellous. Opinions expressed in Outlook are not necessarily
those of NGALE Inc. or its executive.
Submissions can be brought to NGALE meetings, dropped off at the AIDS Committee office
(345/347 Duckworth Street [Terra Nova Place], 6th floor), mailed to NGALE (P.O.
Box 6221, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada A1C 6J9), faxed to (709) 579-0559, or given to a
member of the NGALE newsletter committee or executive. Outlook currently publishes on a
quarterly basis, in early December, March, June, and September. Deadline for submissions is
the last Thursday of the month preceding that of publication. All submissions are kept on file,
and will be returned on request.

Outlook Gets !
Be sure to see our entry in the "Hall of Shame" of the
Roman Catholic Anti-Defamation League of Newfoundland for a
comic that we ran in the January-February 1996 issue
(and brought back for an encore in the January-February 1997 issue). Curiously, no entries have
been made in the Hall of Shame since July 1996. Evidently nothing shameful has occurred since then.
The RCADLN also supports the boycott
of the Walt Disney Corporation by the Southern Baptists
for its support of gays and lesbians, the film Priest,
and the ABC-TV show Nothing Sacred.
