Upload Problems

This page deals with how files are uploaded to your Geo account, common questions and problems that can occur when uploading files to Geocities and what you can do about them. As you hopefully know, there are two methods of uploading files: FTP and EZ upload. If you're familiar with at least one of them and now suddenly run into probems, please select on of the links in the list below. (N.B. you should read through all of the problems as sometimes error messages can mean just about anything. )If you're entirely new to the suject, skip the list and read the basic instructions at the end of this page.

Basic Instructions

• EZ upload is available from the file manager, and all you need is a halfway modern browser. At the bottom of the file manager screen (after you've logged in, where you see the files in your directory), there are five empty entry fields with a "browse" button besides each. If you want to upload a larger number of files in one go, you can raise the number of entry fileds by selecting a number of up to 20 from the drop-down menu and clicking "show". For every file you want to upload, click the "browse" button of a new entry field, and select the file in the dialogue box that appears. When you've entered all the files you want to upload, click the "upload" button. After a while, you get a new screen that says "uploaded... " followed by a list of the files at the top.
• FTP means "file transfer protocol". Win95 and WinNT have a built-in command line ftp utility, but to get the most out of FTP, you should install an FTP client (i.e. special software) on your system. Among the most popular are WS-FTP and CuteFTP. Which one you use is entirely up to you - they all work with Geocities. After installing and starting up the software, you'll have to define a new connection. Give it a name (e.g. "Geocities") and anter the server name (ftp.geocities.com), the account (i.e. your membername) and password in the appropriate fields. (If you can't be entirely certain that other people can't access your computer, leave the password blank and let the software ask you each time you connect.) Now you can choose the connection and click the menu entry or icon "connect". After a while, you'll see the contents of your Geo directory (remote) in one window pane, and the contents of your harddisk in the other (local). Select the file(s) you want to upload in the local window and drag it to the remote window. When the upload is finished, the remote window will be updated to show the new files. More info on FTP
