Karen and her uncle in Santa Barbara Karen and Uncle Hugh

Oct. 19, 1997

The Elephant Bar in Santa Barbara was the venue for a very nice lunch and visit with Karen's uncle. Hugh drove down from his home in Los Osos and we came up from Palos Verdes. For us, it was the first visit to the Elephant Bar and we were impressed with the location near the runway of the small airport in Santa Barbara. The decor was early British Colonial India. For atmosphere there was a pair of elephant tusks behind the bar. Closer examination revealed that the tusks were made of not ivory, but fiberglass.

While enjoying a delicious lunch of Mandarin chicken cooked with snow peas and cashews, Uncle Hugh showed pictures of the one room schoolhouse he attended where his father taught, and the old Ford in which he learned to drive. There was another picture of the car that transported one entire family to California from Oklahoma. What a trip that must have been!

After an insightful and entertaining visit, and a moment for a photograph, we said goodbye to Uncle Hugh. We plan to visit him again in Los Osos in the Spring.
