My All-Time Favorite Movies

This page was created by Louisa Moore.

I have been in love with movies since I was born. I can't think of a better way to spend my free time than hanging out at a theater or popping a couple of videos into the VCR. Over the years, I have seen a lot of movies. The following is a list of my favorite movies of all time--not the best movies ever made, not a proclamation of the "artistic" value of movies. This is just for fun.

AMERICAN BEAUTY
American Beauty is one of those films that when you see it, it literally leaves you breathless. No film has blown me away like this one has. Sure, at times Anette Bening is a little over the top, but this is classic American filmmaking at its finest.

This is, undoubtedly, one of the best films ever made. You owe it to yourself to take this cinematic journey into the true lives and loves of the average American family.

Kevin Spacey and Anette Bening in American Beauty

BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
I love this film so much. A lot of people missed this one the first time around. Please rent it now that it's on video. It's much better than DINER...don't listen to what the critics say. It's one of the "smartest" (and not to mention funniest) movies I've seen in years. Please drop by my new Unofficial "beautiful girls" Fan Page for pics, quotes, links and other stuff. If you want to download some nifty mini movies and more pictures, be sure to visit Miramax's official site.

MAGNOLIA
A beautiful, twisted epic of a movie, Magnolia is a great piece of filmmaking. The characters are so achingly real that you'll hurt just watching them try to live out their pathetic lives. And Tom Cruise is incredible in his role as Frank. The ensemble cast is great and oh yes, there is that one scene where frogs fall from the sky....

Check out the Magnolia Official Site for more goodies.

Magnolia

HONEYMOON IN VEGAS
My favorite comedy movie. I just adore Nicolas Cage, but he is so amazingly likeable in this film that you just want to invite him to live at your house forever! This is one of the funniest films ever made. I hope you'll agree. Like I said before, Elvis makes every movie better. A true comedy/romance movie--this one's done right!

WILD AT HEART
David Lynch's finest film, I like to call it "The Wizard of Oz" on acid. Check out my page devoted to David Lynch, Weird on Top. Here you'll find more pictures and links to some really cool web sites.

The boys of L.A. Confidential L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
One of the most expertly crafted and brilliantly acted films I have ever seen is also one of the most enjoyable through repeat viewings. This is probably my second favorite movie of all time!

Check out the superb L.A. Confidential fan page. It's filled with terrific information for all fans. It's off the record, on the QT and very hush hush.

CASINO
A very interesting and totally engrossing study of the mob and their role in Las Vegas in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Believe what you've heard--Sharon Stone is excellent. My only complaint is that they should've beaten Joe Pesci to a pulp during the first ten minutes of the movie instead of the last ten. Pretty violent, but you should see it even if you are squeamish (if only for Don Rickles' scene with the shotgun). Check out MovieWeb's CASINO Page for pics and info.

ROMANCING THE STONE
A good mix of an action/adventure/romance movie. No matter how many times I see it, I can never get enough of this film. The whole idea of a lonely romance novelist who is swept into danger in a foreign land only to be "rescued" (and pestered) by a gung-ho (and sexy) mystery man is every woman's fantasy. The good thing about this film is that it plays well to both women AND men. So what if it's kind of predictable? It's great! Don't forget to check out the Michael Douglas Fan Page!

RAISING ARIZONA
Um, how do you describe this film? A hapless kidnapper steals his wife a baby from a rich millionare and havoc ensues. "Son, you got a panty on yer head." Again, a lovely visit from my favorite cameo actor, Randall "Tex" Cobb. And be sure to visit the Raising Arizona Sounds page, where you can make your compuer real noisy with the zany hijinks of H.I. and Ed.

BROADCAST NEWS
This has been one of my favorite movies for 10 years now (has it been that long)? The story of a super-charged female news producer and the men who love her. There are so many things about this movie that make it great--the acting (thank god Debra Winger dropped out and Holly Hunter stepped in; I can't imagine anyone else in the role; William Hurt is perfect as an idiot, and Albert Brooks...well, who doesn't like Albert Brooks?), the writing (perfectly timed , smart and witty), the direction, the...well, you get the point.

If you haven't seen this film, you're missing out on a lot. Please go rent it today. You won't regret it! I've started a mini-Internet shrine to the film with the Broadcast News Fan Page.

Usual Suspects THE USUAL SUSPECTS
This is, unfortunately, most often referred to as a "guy movie," but I am living proof that chicks dig it too! Kevin Spacey won a well-deserved Oscar for his performance, and the supporting cast (Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollack, Benecio DelToro, and the "effortlessly complex" Gabriel Byrne round out the roster) is absolutely stellar. Tack on some mind-blowing dialogue and an original surprise ending, and you've got a hit. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen...and to top it off, it actually gets better with each viewing. Be sure to check out the director's commentary on the DVD.

THE NAKED GUN
"Niiiiice beaver!" Slapstick comedy at its best. With this type of movie, you either love it or you hate it. I love it! I can't seem to find any web pages that are dedicated to this movie, except a place to download some sounds. Can anybody help me out?

NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION
Actually, I love all four in the series. Especially Christmas Vacation. Everybody loves Chevy Chase, and everybody loves laughing at a hapless dad. Put the two together and you've got a comedy classic. If you loved this, you'll really love the Chevy Chase Tribute Page. This site has lots of info about Chevy from his early SNL days to present. Or if the mood strikes you, why don't you consider joining the one and only Beverly D'Angelo Fan Club?

ANNIE HALL
Still Woody Allen's best work, it encompasses everything that is great about the director and the romantic comedy movie genre. Too bad that stupid no-brainer movie WHEN HARRY MET SALLY had to be the "popular" rip-off. Discover the original, okay? Don't settle for "Woody Allen for the masses."

BABE
Even my cat loves to watch this movie. A polite little pig makes it big. You could probably learn a thing or two by checking this one out. Very entertaining with loveable characters and really amazing talking animal special effects. You'll never touch bacon again. Check out this web site dedicated to this cute little pig.

PULP FICTION
I hate to sound so "trendy," but this really is a great film. I don't get all the ruckus about the violence in it, though. I mean what is so damn "violent" about it? Every day I hear people say how "awful" PF is and how it should be "banned" and stuff. You never SEE anything gross. I can think of lots more disgustingly violent movies than this. What about you? And I'm tired of people preaching about how it glamorizes drug use! HELLO? Bob Dole? Like Quentin Tarantino himself said, anybody who would say that PF glamourizes heroin use obviously has never seen the movie! Bravo! Now if somebody could please get QT to stop acting....Until then, be sure to drop by the Unofficial Pulp Fiction Site.

Nicolas Cage and Gina Gershon in Face/Off MIDNIGHT COWBOY
Very depressing story of a hustler and his dying friend. Great performances by Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. If you're planning to buy this one, I recommend the 25th anniversary edition. It's full of great stuff at the end of the tape, including in-depth interviews with everyone invloved with the film and the original theatrical preview trailer. And it's amazing to watch this now and remember that it originally was rated X.

At left: Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight in the gritty classic.

REAR WINDOW
I never understood the "artistic" arguments for Alfred Hitchcock's works. His movies are so much better when you think of them as just that--MOVIES! Hitchcock was a great filmmaker and knew how to draw you right into the middle of the story. That's why REAR WINDOW is one of my all-time favorites. Preservation and film restoration efforts are now underway, so expect to see Rear Window hit the big screen once again in 1998. Very entertaining, corny, creepy, and invloving. Hey, aren't your curtains open right now........?

FACE/OFF
This is the best action film I have ever seen, even though it stars John Travolta! (Retch)! This is seriously the type of movie where, during the entire thing, you keep asking yourself, "Did I just see what I just saw?" It's amazing.

I don't understand why a lot of people said it's too long--it definitely is NOT! I hope new action movies will try to live up to the standards set by this film. Anyway, I'm sure you've all seen this by now and if you haven't....SHAME! Buy it on DVD and prepare to be amazed.

THE THIN BLUE LINE
Errol Morris captures the essence of a 1976 murder of a Dallas policeman and subsequently the problems within and abuse of the America justice system. This "documentary" film was so convincing that the man who was jailed for the crime was let out of prison! Talk about the power of filmmaking!! (Note: don't confuse this film with the equally great "The Thin Red Line," 1999's first epic war drama).

BLUE VELVET
This has made a lot of critics' top ten films of all time lists. Very dark, very funny, very sadistic, very David Lynch. Most of the movie was filmed near my hometown in Wilmington, NC. While I consider this a true groundbreaker in the work of cinema, it is not for the weak-hearted (or weak-stomached).

HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Another talking animal picture, this one has lots of class. (Well, okay, it's not that classy. Even the older original version and the sequel to this Disney kid movie is entertaining! Follow Sassy, Chance and Shadow on their adventures. And don't worry--you'll think they're goners in some places, but they always make it home safely.

HOME ALONE
Okay, so Macaulay Culkin is kind of annoying now, but he really was perfect in HOME ALONE. Who hasn't dreamt of their family disappearing and having the rule of the house? If you know somebody who insists they don't like this movie, they're lying. Go ahead and rent it again before the pre-Christmas rush makes it vanish from video shelves.

FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF
A very funny teen comedy that captures the "life-in-high-school" theme perfectly. You've probably already seen this one a gazillion times, so I don't see why I should bother writing about it. (I'm right, aren't I)?

BREAKFAST CLUB
Another teen '80s classic. They just don't make movies like they used to!

FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH
As Jeff Spicoli himself would say, it's "Totally Bitchin'!"

A FISH CALLED WANDA
Nothing is as funny as Kevin Kline in this laugh fest! Most people who like this movie are also able to recite the lines by heart. You know who you are!! I recently saw this interview with Michael Palin and he was talking about the "chip up the nose" scene and how most of it was improvised. Apparently, Michael Palin couldn't stop laughing in that scene so Kevin Kline shoved the pear in his mouth on the spur of the moment. Hard to believe that wasn't scripted, isn't it?

INDEPENDENCE DAY
I'm sure I'll take lots of heat for this choice, but I'm sorry, I LOVE this movie! This is what hollywood's all about (and what it SHOULD be about): action, adventure, romance, tragedy and comedy! Yeah! Have you noticed that the people who "hate" this movie are often normal moviegoers who GUSHED over shit like "Multiplicity" or "Forrest Gump" or "Michael"? Come on all you "intelligent" movie goers--admit that you loved this!

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
This is one of the best romantic movies ever made! How charming is Sandra Bullock in this one? Lonely Lucy "saves" a stranger and due to a little hospital mix-up, her family believes that she is the comatose guy's new fiancee. Sounds macabre, right? Give it a try!!

Wow! You actually made it through my list of favorite movies! There are so many more, but I just can't list them all. I'm not quite finished with this page, and I'm going to try to rotate the titles often, so stop back by sometime soon.
