Subject: Warts List Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 21:17:32 -0500 From: "McE" To: "Rod Davis" Here's the situation-- (not a huge problem, but strange nonetheless) Upon creating a new file, there will be 40 fact names in the drop-down list of facts. Click on the drop-down list of fact names to select the fact you want. You will see 21 of the 40 facts (A thru E). You need to scroll to see beyond E, unless you opt to type a letter to cause the list to scroll. For example, if you want the 'Will' fact name, you can type a 'w' and the list will scroll so that Will is visible. This is a little faster than clicking on the scroll bar and scrolling down the list. The potential problem: If you use the method of typing the 1st letter of the fact to fast-scroll the list, 18 of the 40 fact names will automatically become the 'preferred fact' upon entering the fact. (Only 3 of the fact titles, Naturalization, Ordination & Property, are not visible within the first 21 (A thru E) facts; so no scrolling is necessary to find the other 15.) How one would normally enter alternate facts: Style 1. Before you begin, the preferred-box will be grayed out & unselectable. Click on the drop-down list of facts. Click on the fact, which will appear in the fact name box at the top. Tab or click over to Date or Comment/Location. Upon doing so, the preferred box is no longer grayed out. You can click on the box to tell FTM that this fact you are entering is the preferred fact. Any previous fact will become unchecked. So far so good. Style 2. Instead of clicking on the drop-down list, simply type in the fact name in the field for the fact name. Click or tab to Date or Comment/Location. The check box is no longer grayed out. You can click here if you want this to be the preferred fact. Style 3. Type 1st letter to fast-scroll to desired fact. Check box for preferred is still grayed out AND EMPTY (as in Style 1 & 2). Click on fact name from the drop-down list. Check box remains grayed out but now has a check in it. Click on date or comment/location. The check box is no longer grayed out and is checked. If you don't notice this & hit enter, you have just made this fact the preferred fact. Of the 40 fact names, these 18 will become the preferred fact if using Style 3: Adoption Baptism (LDS) Bar Mitzvah Bat Mitzvah Blessing Born Burial Confirmation Confirmation (LDS) Cremation Died Elected Emigration Endowment (LDS) Excommunicated Naturalization Ordination Property These 22 fact names will not become preferred if using style 3: Baptism Caste Census Christening Degree Education First Communion Graduation Immigration Military Service Mission (LDS) Namesake Nationality Occupation Probate Religion Residence Retirement Sealed to parents (LDS) Social Security Number Temple Will Oddly, using a different letter will cause some of the above 22 to also become preferred. If I type an 'R' or 'S' & then select Temple or Will, they will become preferred. (Discovered that via type-o. Experimented a little, but not too much.) I thought for a second that particular letters caused this distinction, but that can't be when "Baptism (LDS)" will become preferred but "Baptism" will not. I tried 4 user-created fact names. All became the preferred fact with the Style 3 entry method. Why someone would want to use Style 3: 1. It scrolls the drop-down list a little faster. 2. It's better than Style 2, because the user can be sure to spell it the same way. That way, you won't end up with "Burial" & "Buried". Using 5.0b McE
