ARMSTRONG COAT OF ARMS
Family Name History
The Scottish surname Armstrong is a well-known border surname and is a
literal translation of the Norman Fortenbras. It is of nickname
origin, being derived from a personal attribute of the original bearer
and the surname means simply one who is " strong in the arm ". This
surname is also found in some number in the north of England. This surname
is recorded as early as the thirteenth century and the Armstrongs were a
major clan of the Lowlands of Scotland. One Adam Armstrong was pardoned
of manslaughter in Carlisle in 1235, while one William Armstrong is noted
in 1274 in Carlisle as serving on an inquisition. In 1328 one
William Armstrong is known to have lent money to the King of Scotland,
while in 1342 another loan was made to King David II by one Richard
Harmestrang. In the sixteenth century the Armstrong clan was felt to be
too powerful and was thought to be a source of embarrassment to
King James V, who duly set about bringing the clan into line. An
expedition disguised as a hunting tour arrived at the Armstrong seat
and several ballads now relate how the Armstrongs, ready to welcome
their King with a feast, suddenly found themselves under arrest.
Notable bearers of this surname include Edwin Armstrong ( 1890-1954 )
whose work on the correction of static on the radio led to the creation
of ( FM ) or Frequency Modulation. Other notables include Louis
Armstrong ( 1900 - 1971 ), the American jazz trumpeter commonly known
as Satchmo, Henry Jackson Armstrong ( b. 1912 ), the only boxer to hold
three World Titles simultaneously, and Neil Alden Armstrong ( b. 1930 ),
the American astronaut who was the first man to set foot on the moon on
July 20,1969.
