Building Fine Furniture

by G. William Scherer
Sterling Publishing Co., 1992

This book is written with the perspective of a veteran woodshop teacher. Scherer takes a very different approach to woodworking from most authors writing for the hobbyist. He calls his method the "casework system" and describes it as an adaptation of manufacturing methods used by the television industry to build furniture cabinets.

The casework system is distinguished by the use of limited tools, inexpensive plywood panels and carefully selected lower grades of lumber to produce cabinet furniture that could compete successfully with mid-grade commercial furniture. Most joinery is reduced to screwed and glued joints, yet the casework is strong and durable. Fabrication and assembly techniques are within the capabilities of the occasional woodworker.

Mr. Scherer takes the reader through several "projects" including a chest of drawers, night stand, desk, book case, china hutch and entertainment center. He provides no measured drawings for the projects; leaving that up to the reader, he details how to plan and assemble the case, fit drawers and construct doors.

It's a wonderful book that opens up new possibilities for hobby woodworkers. I would recommend it to anyone who has visited a furniture gallery and come away saying, "I could build something better than that!".
