Reese's Cup

(January 16, 1999-Tempe, Arizona) Kim and her partner Kristie Phillips, the "Hershey Kisses", competed in the 1999 Reese's Cup and finished third. Both performed on the balance beam and the floor exercise, with great costumes and enthusiasm. Kim performed to the Armageddon soundtrack (Aerosmith) in a mature routine on beam, scoring a 9.775, and to "Love Takes Time" by Diana Ross and the Supremes on floor, scoring a 9.975. The second routine was inspired by her recent engagement and even included an ending pose with her engagemnt ring. For pictures and quotes from this event, check out IG's Reese's coverage!

Rock 'n'Roll Championships

Kim won her second RnR guitar this year in Orlando, FL at Disney's Fieldhouse. She was awesome in winning, with two outstanding routines. She had tough competition this year in the person of Vanessa Atler, but she pulled through. Her first routine was performed in a Cheerleading costume to "Hey Mickey!," and her second to "Rock 'n' Roll Pt. 2." She wore the same outfit for the second routine as in last years "Bad to the Bone" routine. Both routines included outstanding tumbling--double layout, two whips through to a double back, and a closing double back! This competition was aired on ESPN on October 5th. and will likely be on again and again and again... =) Watch it!!

Day 2
(August 22, 1998--Indianapolis, IN)
Kim qualified for the US National team after a five year absence, and she did it in style. She finished one spot out of the top ten in 11th place. Kim fixed up a few mistakes from the first day of competition with a better vault and bars, but she had a fall on beam and a step out of bounds on floor. Still, she almost hit 8-for-8 routines and has to be extremely pleased with her performance.

Kim's Scores
vault: 9.437
bars: 8.700
beam: 8.550
floor: 8.925
total: 35.612

US Classic

Kim finished 3rd AA at the US Classic held August 1st in San Antonio, TX, a result that qualified her to US Nationals to be held in Indianapolis, IN starting August 19th!!!

Here are the Official Scores, along with the routines and their start values given to me by people who attended the event:

For those wondering why the lower start values or scores on some events, Kim did now throw all the difficulty of the routines she had been training, as well as these few tidbits...

--her overshoot on bars was not in HS
--her gainer layout on beam did not connect with the full turn
--wolf 1 1/2 jump on floor was not complete

Women's World Pro Championships

April 4-5--Lowell, MA--Kim came in third behind Amy Chow and Shannon Miller. The other competitors included Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Amanda Borden, Svetlana Bakhtina, and Eugenia Rochina. On Saturday the gymnasts competed on vault, uneven bars, beam, and floor exercise. On Sunday, they competed on the vault and uneven bars with Saturday's scores carrying over, then were reseeded and competed balance beam and a performance floor. Kim appeared to have a blast! Kim's routines were spread over two days with one perfect 10 on floor, and a two hit bars routines, despite earlier problems. She performed great on vault both nights and hit floor the first night with a routine to" Lord of the Dance," as well as the second night, performing to "Bad to the Bone." Both nights her beam was very solid with only tiny problems here and there. Here are the scores:

American Classic

February 20--Orlando, Florida--Kim only competed three events, excluding bars, and did well (although in IG magazine Kim stated she wasn't looking at scores, but figuring out whether or not she still likes competingl):

Scores:
beam: 8.625
bars: didn't compete
vault: 9.187 (7th place!)
floor: 8.750

From a source (TP) who attended the event:
"Kim only did 3 events, hit on beam and vault, ran out of steam on last pass on floor(whip-double pike). *Second* pass was double layout (opened w/full in). Depending on how bars looks, comeback could be very viable."

I was able to aquire a tape of the event, and this is what I saw:
Beam: Kim stepped up from the board and did an immediate switch side leap. Also: ff-2 layout stepouts, front tuck, full turn w/leg held horizontal, gainer layout stepout, and a round off double back dismount. She had tiny bobbles on the full turn and the punch front.
Vault: Kim performed a yurchenko layout for the first vault and a yurchenko full for the second. Both were incredibly high and had great form.

Here are the start values to Kim's routines. This info comes from Cori Rizzo, a balance beam judge at the American Classic, and a contributor to the gymn-l:

"Kim Z. did not compete bars. In training she was working a Tkatchev to a counter to handstand, and a giant full to a gienger. On vault she competed a yurchenko layout (SV=9.3, score 9.075) and a yurchenko full (SV=9.5, score 9.3) for a vault average of 9.187 (7th place). Her height and distance is still great- she just needs harder vaults. On beam her SV was only 9.2, and she scored an 8.625 without a fall. She missed her gym-acro connection (full turn with leg up to gainer layout step-out), and so the SV reflected a .2 deduction for missing special requirement. She did a leap on mount to an immediate switch-side leap (possible A + D), but the A-panel did not award D credit for the leap. She had 2 other D's (punch front, and double pike dismount), and her SC bonus was for flic-lay-lay (+.1), and switch leap, switch leap (+.2)."

Also, Billy, who attended the event and got some footage put up a mpeg of Kim's crash on floor. I know, I know, that's not what we want to see, but hey, at least it's something!

Reese's Cup

(St.Petersburg, FL--Jan. 24, 1998)So, did you guys watch the Reese's Cup? Wasn't Kim awesome?! In case you missed it, I'll summarize her performance for you. She performed first on beam, to "God Bless America." That might seem like an unusual choice of music, but it was at the recommendation of Mary Lee Tracy, since that is the motto of their gym. She also wore a blue and red leotard because those are the colors of the gym too. I miss her old plange mount, but she performed the same elements as in the Battle of the Sexes - back-handspring to 2 layouts, and a gainer layout, with a double back dismount. She's obviously been working a lot at it, because each of the elements are higher and cleaner. I was also impressed with her dance on beam, everyone else seemed totally unaware of their music, but Kim played to it. She received a 9.825 (Bela gave her the highest score, a 9.9;-D! Now onto the floor exercise, her best event, where she performed to Jock Jams. Her dance was great and her tumbling even better, with a double layout, two whips to a double back and a double back to top it all off. She received four perfect tens, and despite finishing second, Amanda and Kim both gave great performances.
