McCallum

Malcolm McCallum, son of Donald McCallum and Christina (or Christian) Sinclair,  was born about 1815 in or near the village of Clachan in Kilcalmonell parish, Argyll, Scotland, according to census records.  On 17 Feb 1844 he was married to Mary Colville, daughter of William Colville and Mor (or Sarah) McGeachy, who were married 14 Apr 1814 in Killean And Kilchenzie parish, Argyll..

The village of Clachan (Kilcolmonell parish) is located in the upper northwest part of the peninsula of Kintyre, on the west coast of Scotland. I have been told that numerous McCallum families lived in the area, and that Colville was also a common name there.

My great-grandmother, Christina C. McCallum was born to Malcolm and Mary (Colville) McCallum 29 January 1845 in or near Clachan, but christened in Renfrewshire, as follows:

"parish of Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire. McAllum, 29 January 1845. Was born at Kilcalmenel, Argylseshire, CHRISTINA, daughter lawful of Malcolm McAllum and Mary Colville, and baptised 23 November 1845, Lochwinnoch."

Malcolm and Mary's son John was born in Renfrewshire.  I have been told by a fellow McCallum researcher, that a group of Clachan area McCallums moved to near Paisley, Renfrewshire, and ran a tannery for some years before leaving for the United States in 1850.  However, my McCallum family returned to Argyll where more children were born, and eventually lived near and in Campbeltown.

Christina McCallum married James Hunter Girvan on the first of April 1870 in Campbeltown.  Their youngest son, Robert Girvan, is my grandfather.  (see Girvan page).  Christina and James' daughter Mina married Neil S. McCallum.  Whether he was distantly related is not known.

I remain hopeful that with all the McCallums in this world, someone will be able to shed more light on this family and connect with my McCallum lline.  There are so many McCallums in Argyll!!  Below is an incomplete chart, which is all that I know of my McCallum roots.

The above is a picture of my great-grandmother, Christina McCallum Girvan,  in her later years.
