Here's the information I currently have on Anamoose, ND (McHenry county):
Elevation: 1620
Zip: 58710
Peak population: 669 (reached in 1910) --substantially less now.
This settlement was founded about 1893 (100 yrs ago) by Romanians who
came here from Saskatchewan, Canada. The Soo Line RR arrived and a
townsite was established. The post office was established Sept 7, 1898
with Albert Albrecht as post master (I remember the Albrecht grocery
store with Wally and Eric as owners--they moved to Fargo around
1981--really nice folks).
The village incorporated in 1922.
Here's what we're all waiting for: The name is credited to the daughter of a Soo Line RR official, and is a corruption of the Chippewa word "uhnemoosh" meaning female dog (it's a good thing the meaning isn't translated into some other language). Anamoose is a favorite of collectors of unusual place names (people usually indicate some interest in the name whenever I tell them I lived in Anamoose--kinda hard to not like the name).
School team: Anamoose Royals
Fond Royals memories: My family attending basketball and football games (very little of which I watched), popcorn in boxes.
Anamoose suffered a disheartening loss when the Asmus family moved to Pevely Missouri. :)
