Foundry Networks' NetIron Internet Routers to be Used by Yahoo! GeoCities

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 2000--Foundry Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY), a leader in high-performance, end-to-end switching and routing solutions, today announced that Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet communications, commerce and media company, has deployed Foundry's NetIron(TM)800 Internet routers and ServerIron(TM) Internet traffic and content management solutions to provide high performance routing capacity, as well as increased scalability and reliability at the core of Yahoo!(R) GeoCities (http://geocities.metrocities.net).

The NetIron800 Internet routers dramatically reduce performance bottlenecks with wire-speed IP routing, robust BGP4 support (including BGP4 Load Sharing, Route Reflection, AS Confederation and Route Flap Dampening), and scalability to more than two million routes and hundreds of Internet peers. The tremendous performance enhancement enables users of Yahoo! GeoCities to quickly find what they are looking for, whether it's building a new home page or visiting an existing online neighborhood.

With routing capacity designed to accommodate high density Packet Over SONET and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces ranging from OC3c/STM-1/OC12c/STM-4/OC48c/STM-16 and robust, Internet scale BGP4 implementation, the chassis-based NetIron is designed to meet the expanding bandwidth and control requirements faced by content providers and portals. With Foundry's unique IronCore(TM) ASICs, distributed hardware architecture and IronWare(TM) routing software platform, the NetIron800 delivers up to 92,000,000 packets per second (Mpps) for reliable packet delivery even under the heaviest of Internet traffic loads.

In addition to the NetIron Internet router, Yahoo! is also using Foundry's industry-leading ServerIronXL Layer 4-7 Internet traffic and content management switches to enhance its content and network applications delivery infrastructure. Yahoo! leverages Foundry's unique Switchback(TM) Direct Server Return technology to improve performance of its high-bandwidth content-rich applications in its Yahoo! GeoCities property. According to a report by the Dell'Oro Group, the ServerIronXL is the current Internet traffic and content management switch market leader and the Web switch vendor of choice for the world's most highly trafficked Web sites, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Application Service Providers (ASPs).

As Yahoo! GeoCities continues to expand, Foundry's solutions will play a vital role by continuing to direct network traffic efficiently and by providing users fast access to the most readily available content of their choice.

"This is another significant total solution win for Foundry," said Bobby Johnson, president and CEO of Foundry Networks. "Foundry continues to provide best-of-breed solutions, offering a complete end-to-end high performance network infrastructure for customers such as Yahoo!, who require complete, highly available, highly scalable and industry-leading price/performance network solutions."

"We chose Foundry because we needed a scalable and reliable solution that could continue to provide superior performance and accommodate the growth of Yahoo! GeoCities," said Kevin Timmons, director of operations, Yahoo!. "By leveraging Foundry's Internet router and its highly scalable and reliable BGP4 implementation, we were able to better meet the growing bandwidth demands and service availability requirements by Yahoo! GeoCities."
