D'rien

Description

D'rien is a fairly tall man, standing 5'11" in his bare feet and he is broad in the shoulders and chest. His hair is straight and fine, falling just past his shoulders in a thick tumble of rich onyx, contrasting against the pale golden tan of his skin. His facial features are finely formed, but the masculinity of them defies the term, the strength inherent in the arcing brows over his eyes, the thick sweep of lashes adding a depth to them. His nose is not a gentle sweep, rather it is a broad ridge that blends into his features, a noble line that defines the length of his high cheekbones and broadness of his mouth and chin. His deep silver eyes sparkle as he observes the world, watching everything that goes on around him with a maturity that comes through time. His shoulders are broad and muscular and the muscles can be seen when his arms flex and move as he walks.

(Kawaii!!!  Palia had no chance against him!)

Some clothes D'rien wears

Formal Clothes

The lithe bluerider has gone all out tonight, his pristine white shirt molds to his chest, showing off the muscles of his chest and shoulders, tightly laced with a deep black leather thong. The long sleeves flow along his arms, gathered at the wrists by more lacing, showing off the masculine muscles in his hands. The shirt is accentuated by deep black leather vest that hangs open is worn over the shirt, allowing a place for his knot to rest on his shoulder, the simple chords and knot marking him as a blue rider at Fort Weyr. The shirt tucks into a pair of black breeches that look like they were sewn on the bluerider, every thigh muscle of his legs are defined by the taunt material as it caresses his shape, showing off the fact he's in peak physical condition. His breeches in turn tuck into a pair of buffed and polished black boots that gleam, the metal heels setting off sparks every once in a while when he walks across flagstones. His body stands straight and tall and his hair is pulled back in a neat queue, the style adding definition to his features and his bangs are brushed back occasionally, to keep them out of the way of his silver gaze.

Riding Leathers

Today D'rien wears a pair of leathers that cling to his form, conforming to the well muscled figure. The dark charcoal coloring blends in a series of shades that seem to shift with the light, accentuating the dark onyx of his hair and drawing out the silver shade of his eyes. The shirt is taunt across his shoulders, the definition of each muscle in his chest and arms. The breeches conform to his legs, his waist cinched by a wide riding belt with metal loops. His breeches outline against his thighs and calves before tucking into a pair of new riding boots with metal shod heels.

Casual Wear

The verdant greens of the tunic, in which the cornflower-blues predominate in the azure shades, accent his silver eyes, deepening the shade to an almost molten hue. The gentle camber of a rainbow dances in iridescent splendor, where it has been embroidered, as it curves from hem to over shoulder, and down the back of this well fitting tunic accentuate his broad chest and muscular torso. All the turns of hard work show in the way his body is fit, all of it flowing into a 'V' shape at his waist. While not narrow his waist is lean, no fat shows on this hard working man, leaving him built well and his strength is evident. His legs are as muscular as his arms, the shape of the musculature filling out the gentian-indigos color of his trousers as they tuck into the shiny black riding boots he's wearing, they are polished to a nice shine and look to be new. He wears a black belt with some pouches and a belt knife around his narrow waist, accompanied by a plain leather jacket for protection from the elements. A knot in Fort Weyr's colors sits on his shoulder, threaded through with an azure blue strand for his lifemate Falnerith and a patch for the Horizon wing is stitched on the shoulder of his tunic. His hair is tied back, to keep it out of his eyes even though it only reaches slightly past his shoulders.

Everyday outfit before Impression

He is broad of chest from the turns of hard work in the beastcraft and it all flows in a V shape to his waist. While not narrow his waist is lean, no fat shows on this hard working man, leaving him built well and his strength is evident. His legs are as muscular as his arms, the shape of the musculature visible under the black breeches that he wears; they show signs of wear and tear along the seams and at the knees; with each stride he takes. The muscles have developed from turns of hard work breaking and riding runners, as well as the lifting that is involved in the beastcraft. He's strong, but there is a gentleness about him that leads one to suspect that he would never willingly harm anyone or anything. His eyes lend credence to that as they twinkle with his every smile, laugh lines showing around his silver eyes, only slightly visible as lighter gold lines against the deeper gold of his tanned skin. All in all he is a meeting of contrasts that combine into a whole that is gentle and kind. His feet are a bit larger than most would expect for someone his size, giving him an off kilter look even with the worn black boots he wears. His breeches tuck into the boots, keeping them in place as he works. There are scuff marks on the riding boots that may never come out of the leather and they extend to just slightly past his knees, but can be folded down when he's not riding runners.

D'rien's History

Derien, the only child of a Master Deris (father) of the Beastcraft hall and Master Leather Smith Ienis (Mother) grew up in the craft hall and it's surrounding lands. His mother lived on a fairly large cothold that supplied breeding stock runners for the craft hall, so it was no wonder that he chose to go into the that line of work when he was old enough to apprentice. His skills with the runners and with working leather were excellent, but he was pretty rough around the edges. He seemed to get into trouble as a prankster, even though he was not the prankster, but rather the one being brunt of the jokes.  This happened often since he was fairly shy and withdrawn growing up.

Around his 15th turn, just as it seemed like he was going to get past senior apprentice, a young female apprentice caught his eye and seemed to return his affections.  What he did not know was that the lady was just toying with him to make another apprentice jealous. She strung him along with promises and teasing, but in the end after a very bad fight, the truth was revealed and D'rien's heart was left in pieces by her treachery. Vowing never to fall for another girl again, he tried to focus on his studies, but the harder he tried the more he seemed to mess up. Fearing that their son was doomed to be an apprentice all his life, his parents came to a decision. They were getting old, Derien was born late in their lives and they needed someone to run their cothold now that both of them were Masters.

So with that in mind, they decided to send their only child to go and find his cousin Deri, for whom he was named after. She'd been last seen at Fort Weyr when Derien was in his early teens so he was sent there first, eventually he met with Jalis, Senior Weyrwoman at Fort, who was concerned about Deri as well.  She advised Derien to go to the Southern Continent to check Tera Weyr. After a few days he returned, with no word of his cousin, but with the promise of Tera Weyr's riders that they would keep an eye out for Deri for him.

Not to long after that Derien was searched for a clutch at Fort Weyr, and he stood. He had some troubles with a certain woman who impressed to a gold dragon, which made him further withdrawn and quiet. Turns passed and Rhiannoth rose laying a fine clutch on the sands. Much to Derien's surprise he was searched again and again he stood, this time fairly sure that he would be left standing once more.

It was blue Falnerith who chose him that day, forever changing his life as well as his name.

Serenely Calm Sky Blue Hatchling ends his wandering as he comes to a stop in front of Derien. The dragon gives a little nod then peers deeply into the candidate's silver eyes, adoration showing in his own whirling eyes.

The warmth of the Sands seems to engulf you as a mental presence touches yours. << Ahhhh, D'rien. There you are. >> echos through your mind, spoken in an impossibly deep baritone. The voice seems to be coming from the Serenely Calm Sky Blue Hatchling that has stopped in front of you, regarding you with adoration. His hunger is an omnipresent thing, barely held in check, as it twines in with every thought he shares with you, << I am Falnerith >> he informs you, << And I am hungry. I trust you will feed me? I'm really -very- hungry. >>

Time passed swiftly during his weyrling period, D'rien and Falnerith had some difficulties that made them the decidedly odd pair out.  Falnerith was prone to nightmares.  Nightmares that brought him and D'rien both out of the bowels of sleep shaking, shrieking or weeping with the intensity of them.  From getting devoured by thread, crashing into walls when learning to fly, coming out of between into a solid rock, getting seriously scored in threadfall, fear of the dark and being alone, these horrid nightmares plagued both rider and dragon. Only reassurances by D'rien could calm Falnerith, the rider too feeling the horror of the nightmares.  They persevered and made it to graduation.

Several turns have passed since that time and the pair is still together.  Falnerith has nightmares, even through adulthood and D'rien continues to keep vigilance at night to scare them away.  The two ride in the Horizon wing at Fort Weyr, although D'rien's secret ambition is to one day lead the wing.  Falnerith has caught green Luciath twice, putting D'rien in a temporary drunken state as he tries not to think of who Luciath's rider is.  He also has done many candidate searches with Falnerith and managed to snag a pair of sisters, Valeda of Lemos during a search for Ceristh's clutch and then later her sister Palia for Rhiannoth's clutch.

D'rien and Palia at the dance

D'rien is coming out of his shy shell thanks in part to the efforts of Palia the second sister, who came to the weyr searching for Valeda.  He was impressed by her strong determination and her courage to make it in the weyr (although at times he wanted to beat some sense into her). Especially when she took his riding leathers and tried to disguise herself from her parents.  That mildy irritated him until he met her parents.  Palia had a crush on him, obviously, but D'rien feared that a romance with her would be a repeat of his first.  He's been careful with her, afraid to have a broken heart again from some woman's carelessness.  Their relationship is currently in a 'limbo status because she is a newly impressed weyrling to Blue Keirath.

He's so romantic! In the rain!

In the meantime D'rien continues to read and study flight formations, aspiring to his ambitions to one day take over a wing of his own and become not D'rien, wingrider on the Horizon wing, but Wingleader to his own wing.

Studying paid off big time. The weyr was changing. With the newly released weyrlings graduating including Palia who had been released, there was also a change in the leadership. Bronze Rausnath had flown the senior queen making J'van the Weyrleader of Fort Weyr to Senior Weyrwoman Jalis and gold Ceristh. This pairing led to a surprise of great proportions. Apparently J'van had seen the way D'rien was working towards a wing and after much thought on who the new Wingleader of the Dawn wing would be, he chose to give the knot to D'rien. Announcing his new status in front of the recently graduated riders, he congratulated Avila on her new Wingleader. Palia was there to congratulate him as well although the true congratulations didn't come until weeks later when she met him on the plains of Keroon. There they cemented their relationship all the way around. D'rien was content and happy.

One day in the caverns, D'rien was having dinner when a proddy Yilisa came in. Falnerith was already fussing over the glowing green Maeveth. D'rien didn't carry any thoughts of catching her. Falnerith had chased Maeveth many times before and each time he only succeeded in gaining himself a drunk lifemate and an ice cold lake bath. Only this time he did catch Maeveth, after ridding himself of a brown who thought to hitchhike by grabbing onto his tail. D'rien and Yilisa were caught in their dragon's passion as well, drawing them together for the night. Afterwards there were no regrets although a week later after being unsatisfied and also disheartened by Keirath's catch of Gynraeth, D'rien had to reassure Palia the next morning she was not "lacking" as K'rain made her feel by hightailing it out of there and he showed her as well.

That same day he finally led his wing into a full threadfall attack. Falnerith and D'rien both worked to bring the entire wing back to Fort Weyr with little to no casualties save for G'rol the rider of his wing who managed to get a severe tongue lecture from both D'rien and J'van for endangering other members of their wings. Life continues for the pair as both dragon and rider, D'rien and Falnerith head towards their destiny as Wingleaders of the Dawn Wing at Fort Weyr.

D'rien's personality

A combination of Sir Gawain and Sir Galahad, D'rien has faults like Gawain but the sweetness of Galahad.  He's shy, sweet, honorable and good although he's got a temper that can flare and defend his friends if they fall under someone's scorn.  His sense of humor is hidden beneath the layers of outward seriousness he presents so that no one can hurt him again like that apprentice girl had.  Falnerith's nightmares shake him more than he lets on, and because of the severity of them, he rarely speaks of them, keeping it between him and his dragon.

His favorite things to do are read and train for the position of wingleader.  He also likes leather working, braiding, weaving, dying and tack making the strips into useful items.  Because of his experience with animals he still occasionally breaks in the Weyr's runners with the stablehands, keeping his old craft alive for a hobby.

Tonal Leaf Prints Egg

Wrapped in a vibrant array of fall colors, this egg is awash with browns, reds, oranges, and even yellows. The outlines of a wide array of different shaped leaves mark the surface of the egg. Some leaves are long and thin as if grass, while others are spikey. Still others are rounded and small. The larger imprints each bear a long stem and spider-like veins spread across their shapes like dozens of tiny rivers.

Egg Description

Described by Derien, Tweaked by Nicole (I'm guessing from the hatching log the theme was Nature in all her glory!)

Egg Hatch

Tonal Leaf Prints Egg breaks into a dozens of scattered pieces like a pile of leaves jumped into by an errant child to leave behind the form of a hatchling.

Hatchling Name

Serenely Calm Sky Blue Hatchling

Falnerith's Description

Deep blue shades of the atmosphere form the raiment adorning his frame. High summer's sky, when the sun is the brightest, flows down his back and spreads across translucent wings, deepening to the twilight hue of lapis lazuli as it drizzles along the length of his tail. Cloud-like dapples of a matte, silvery blue highlight his wing spars and detail the delicate precision of sculpted muscles. A riot of spring's pre-dawn horizon is intermixed with winter's gray tinged blue shadowing his chest, belly and supple limbs in a scattered pattern of color and darkening across the undersides of his wings to velvety slate.

Dragon Description Credit

M'kal wrote this hatchling, taking inspiration from the evening sky seen through the window as he wrote, it was tweaked by Jalis.  The theme for the hatchling colors was nature in her fury of splendor sky colors.

What The Candidates Saw

Serenely Calm Sky Blue Hatchling ends his wandering as he comes to a stop in front of Derien. The dragon gives a little nod then peers deeply into the candidate's silver eyes, adoration showing in his own whirling eyes.

What D'rien Heard

The warmth of the Sands seems to engulf you as a mental presence touches yours. << Ahhhh, D'rien. There you are. >> echos through your mind, spoken in an impossibly deep baritone. The voice seems to be coming from the Serenely Calm Sky Blue Hatchling that has stopped in front of you, regarding you with adoration. I'm really -very- hungry. >>

Name Inspiration for Falnerith

The names of the dragons were inspired by 'Peanuts' the lovable comic strip characters from Charles Schultz.  Falnerith's name was taken from Franklin's name.

Falnerith's Mindvoice

His 'speaking' voice is an extremely deep baritone, even as a hatchling, and his emotional barometer is the sky-colors that accompany his words. Good moods bring clear sunny skies. His dark moods bring clouds, and if he's ever angry expect to sense lightning and thunder.

Falnerith's Temperament

Quiet and even-tempered, normally mellow to a fault, this dragon wants nothing more than to help you do whatever it is that you feel is important. Anything you care about, he'll care about. Whatever you do, he'll want to share the experience. However, he won't just be your mirror; he'll have interests of his own. Wherever a harper plays, he'll want to be, or send you there to listen for him. He'll beg you to memorize tunes so that he can sing them to you or other dragons.

There will come a day when he requests that you have the weyr tailor show him what 'superior clothing' looks like and then he won't rest until you dress up that way so that you look your very best. He'll have advice for you. Not always the best, but gleaned from his observations of the world around him and how it -seems- to work. He's got a sense of humor and will play small jokes on you, when he's able to. But your lifemate has his flaws, too.

His intense imagination may provide him with wonderful daydreams (which he'll share with you), but they'll also make for spectacular nightmares (which he'll -also- share with you). There will be times, on the order of twice or thrice a sevenday, when he can not rest for the turbulence in his mind and by extension you won't either as he whimpers and seeks reassurance. These fits will not decrease in adulthood, though the focus of them will change. Whatever stress you or he face in his daily life will haunt his nights and the only thing that will banish the terrors will be an ever changing ritual of song, perhaps the light of a tallow candle, perhaps the warding scent of some herb package. As much you need your partner, he will always need you just as badly. How such a self-confident creature can have these attacks is unfathomable, but in your steadiness he will find his balance point.

Temper and Mindvoice Credit

This dragon is loosely based on Franklin from Peanuts. All of Franklin's traits plus a few traits that M'kal dreamed up.

Franklin from 'Peanuts'

Franklin met Charlie Brown at the beach in 1968. They'd never met before because they went to different schools, but they had fun playing ball so Charlie Brown invited Franklin to visit him at this house across town for another play session. Later, Franklin turned up as center-fielder on Peppermint Patty's baseball team and sits in front of her at school. Franklin is thoughtful and can quote the Old Testament as effectively as Linus. In contrast with the other characters, Franklin has the fewest anxieties and obsessions. He and Charlie Brown spend quite a bit of time talking about their respective grandfathers. When Franklin first appeared in the late 60s, his noticeably darker skin set some readers in search of a political meaning. However, the remarkable becomes unremarkable when readers learn that Schulz simply introduced Franklin as another character, not a political statement.

Cinn

Shockingly Orange Egg

Orange. Unrepentantly, brightly, flamingly Orange. This egg is among some of the largest in the clutch, and has an almost irregular outline, which would draw the eye alone, were it not for its garish color. It hulks - there is no other word to describe it - a striking contrast of colors, splotched here and there with paler versions of the ochre that glares out at the sensitive eye. There is almost a concave dent in the 'top' of the egg, and the color there fades to a soft tan, looking like a handle from a distance, perhaps to aid the dam in the moving and positioning of this massively ill-proportioned egg.

Sex:  Male Bronze Firelizard
DAM:Wild Gold Firelizard
SIRE:Wild bronze Firelizard

Cherries Jubilee Bronze Firelizard

An uneven glaze of dark red, nearly cherry in some places, drips in syrupy trails down the hide of this bronze firelizard. Lumpy patches of fire, ignited with the barest hint of iridescent blue, dapple across his neckridges and spread out unevenly down his back and across his soft auburn hide. His underbelly is so pale as to nearly shine golden, a creamy smooth hue at odds with the sauce running down upon it from above. Wingsails are a darker, reddish bronze, the pinions dipped in cinnamon and the entire membrane drenched in amber brandy.

Cinn wears a black and brown band with a blue border around the colors, signifying he looks to a blue rider at Fort Weyr.

Temper Inspiration for Cinn

Contentious, brawling, irritable, smart-aleck - all of these words can describe your bronze. He has a temper with an extremely short fuse, and can easily erupt into brawling, chittering anger, save where you are concerned. You are the one person he will listen to, and the one person whose good opinion he must have. Always pulling pranks with his dry wit, whether it's hiding that scroll you've been paying attention to or dropping scraps all over the serving table in Weyr, hall or hold, this little bronze is irreverent and respects very little. Females, when he discovers them, he can take or leave, though if one looks past his gruff exterior she will surely win his heart.

Temper and Description Credit

The egg was inspired by the annual Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay, CA. The festival occurs every year in the 3rd week of October, and is known around the country for its contest to find the largest pumpkin in the US. The pumpkin that won in 1999 was over 950 lbs and was grown in Washington State. The description was created by Briana.  Your bronze's desc is based on the flaming dessert: Cherries Jubilee. The description is from Briana.  Your bronze's temper is based on Logan (Wolverine) of the X-Men comics: Ya want to rumble all up close and personal...? I'm just the guy to accommodate ya. - Wolverine, Uncanny X-Men #340

Corlas

Obsidian Fist Egg

The brittleness of obsidian seems to coat this egg, armoring it against prying eyes. Glassy black glints along seeming fractures, vitreous luster enticing the eye into further study. Perhaps it's not an egg at all, but a deposit left abandoned by the recent volcanic activity?

Sex:  Male Bronze Firelizard
Dam:  Wild Gold Firelizard
Sire:   Wild Bronze Firelizard

Caramel Bronze Firelizard

A warm golden patina stretches from the arch of his neck and spreads along his back, thin fingers reaching along his tail and down each leg. Almost pure gold it is, a fibrous overlay to his barely darker bronze hide beneath. It appears that someone's draped a malformed second skin over this 'lizard, or else let a soft candy to melt and harden. His wings seem to let light through, like the thinnest sisal lit from underneath, fingers of even paler champagne streak down his wings, echoed by markings on either side of his muzzle.

Corlas wears a band that is brown and black, with a faint strand of blue twisted amongst the other colors, marking him as looking to a blue rider at Fort Weyr.

Temper Inspiration for Corlas

He always wants to do right - and at times it can be painful to watch.  Morally upright to the point of having a complex, he's always polite to females, never steals food from anyone, never lips back, and generally is the most well-behaved firelizard around. He's probably growing a massive ulcer, too. He won't chide any one for their behavior, just watch them mournfully with wings flipped to his back.
