Logfile from K'than
Igen Weyr Weyrling Training Field
The long shadows cast by the tall spires above are matched in this area
ofthe Bowl by a few long scars in the floor of the Bowl - a silent
testimony to a few miscalculated landings. Overhead, the dragons seem to fly with increased awareness, as dragons and riders alike keep in mind that a

of dragons, which makes this a perfect area for practice or drills. To the north, the walls of the Bowl part to make way for the Igen Weyr Pass, whereas to the west a glint of water betrays the lake's position. An

murmurs of young riders in training. Straight east is the large opening to the
Weyr's Hatching Grounds. A flurry of activity to the south points one
to the main entrance into the inner Weyr. The center of the Bowl lies to
the southwest.
Ryeth comes along from the field outside the main entrance to the
south.
Ryeth has arrived.
Yashira keeps heading toward the main entrance.
Keller comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the Hatching
Grounds.
Jalar chuckles and shifts to kneeling on his other knee as he talks to
Taliene, "I'm sure that you're right and that's why helping her is so
important. The people your Da and Mama protect can't do that job, so
they do it for them. We owe that to other people. Someday they get to do
something in return. Someday they get to do something for us that we
can't do on our own."
Liah has disconnected.
IgenW-Sands>> In the bleachers, Joshi gives one glance at the eggs and
then heads out, not saying much else.
Joshi comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the Hatching
Grounds.
Joshi has arrived.
Taliene hmms, looking skeptical. "Maybe someday she'll give me
something? I dunno...she's an awful lot of work."
K'than is carrying along his flying gear and looking mildly
disgruntled. "Joshi!" he hollers, spotting her.
Joshi walks out of the hatching grounds, heading towards the stables.
At K'than's holler, she jumps back towards the hatching grounds with a
"What what? Whatever it is I didn't do it!" almost protested in defense. Then
she actually looks, "Oh it's not Torrence," referring to her brother.
"Uh.. Heya K'than." She glances behind him at the green and ventures
more slowly towards the stables, keeping a suspicious eye on Ryeth. Contact
has been avoided until now.
Ryeth eyes Joshi curiously and then glances at her rider, who looks
embarassed.
K'than ers. "Sorry, didn't mean to um... just had an interesting day,
that's all. Did you see the whole thing, the clutching?"
Natasya comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the Hatching
Grounds.
Natasya has arrived.
Terrilia comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the Hatching
Grounds.
Terrilia has arrived.
"Not really no," Joshi shakes he rhead. She glances at the five turn
old girl with K'than. "I saw the last of it. Won a bet too." She stops
walking since he is talking to her. "Got me a good half mark."
Jalar nods seriously, "Someday, I bet that she will. I'd stake my
reputation as a Harper on it." He raises an eyebrow to the girl, "And
you know that there is nothing more important to a Harper than his
reputation."
Natasya smiles at the people she passes, as she passes quickly. There's
food to be eaten. Pregnant woman, coming through.
Natasya heads south to the main entrance.
Natasya has left.
Liah has connected.
K'than grins briefly. "Great. I wonder how my cousin did, come to think
of it." He glances at Ryeth with a vague sort of look as the green
stretches out her neck so she can peer at Joshi with one large eye. "She um..."
he starts, looking back at Joshi, himself. "She doesn't remember, you
know."
Terrilia comes out of the hatching grounds with Natasya and starts
toward the main entrance, but pauses as her eyes adjust and she spots her
daughter. She smiles and changes direction to head toward her and the
Harper, a faintly worried look in her eye. "Evening--Talie, it's time
for dinner. Are you hungry?"
Liah comes closer from another part of the bowl, "Clutching all done?"
Taliene fidgets and looks away from Jalar to nod to her mother, not
smiling. "Yeah. I only had cookies earlier." There's quite a bit of
reproach there.
"Yeah I know," Joshi says looking at Ryeth from beneath her lashes,
"I'm not so lucky." She sounds a bit grumpy - as if she shouldn't be the
-only- one to remember something between the two. "Uh.. what do you mean about
your cousin?" She doesn't see the connection.
Jalar follows Taliene's gaze to her mother. He stands and turns toward
her, "Harper's duties, Weyrsecond. I'm sorry we didn't have a chance to
speak earlier."
K'than manages to bundle up his leathers into a tidier sort of armful.
"Oh, she made at least one bet, that I know of. She wanted to borrow
from me, but I didn't really have much to spare so since I wasn't willing to
risk it better myself I didn't want to have her risking it for me." He
shoots a sharp glance at Ryeth, who has tilted her head around and is
eyeing Joshi with her other eye.
Liah dips a curtsey to the harper, a considering glance to his scarred
calf before starting to slip quietly away from the group.
Terrilia's smile to Jalar is warm, but harried. "Igen's Duties--I am,
too, and I'm sorry I can't stay and talk right now, either. I'm starving. I
missed lunch when Keturath started clutching." Her eyes flick down to
Taliene and her smile dims slightly. "I hope she hasn't been bothering
you."
Jalar smiles warmly at Talienne as he answers Terrilia, "Bother?
Hardly. Children are are my work, at least one of the most fun parts of my
work." He looks back at the woman, "She's a good child and you have every
reason to be proud of her."
"Ah but you have to take a risk and gamble," Joshi says, "Because it's
worth the reward of winning a half mark." She smiles at K'than but her
smile leaves her face when she sees Ryeth looking at her. She's seen
that look before on the sands. "Ah.. see you later K'than." She begins to
head away.
Liah heads into the tunnel to the east, into the Hatching Grounds.
Liah has left.
Ryeth croons entreatingly, and Kery shoots her another sharp glance.
Taliene looks slightly suspicious, but returns Jalar's smile with
growing warmth. "We were talkin' about dragons and Kerriel and my Turnday," she
adds.
K'than holds up a hand. "Wait, wait," he tells Joshi, and continues to
eye
Ryeth. He's silent long enough that it's obvious he's having some kind
of
silent debate.
Aerion wanders in from the center of the bowl.
Aerion has arrived.
Terrilia smiles, looking relieved. "Thank you--I'm glad to hear it. I
hope
we'll get a chance to talk properly sometime soon--right now I'm afraid
we
really need to get to dinner now. Clear skies to you!" She holds out
her
hand for Taliene's, and the pair start toward the living cavern.
Joshi stops near the stables, head moving as she curses something to
herself. She turns around and asks, "What is it K'than?" She doesn't
stay
still, edging towards the door of the stable, only a foot away from her
and safety is there.
Terrilia strides towards the center of the Bowl.
Terrilia has left.
Taliene strides towards the center of the Bowl.
Taliene has left.
K'than grins briefly. "Uh- well. We've never done this before..." Ryeth
bugles preemptorily, no doubt frightening the liver out of at least one
runner in that stable. "Ryeth, hush! I heard you, alright?" Kery says
exasperatedly. "How do you feel about another stint with a white knot
and
a bunch of weird chores?" he asks Joshi with a 'winning' smile.
Jalar looks around and begins to catch in on a new conversation. He
stands
back and listens for a bit.
Aerion casts a look over at the bugle and shades her eyes to catch a
glimpse of what's happening. A low uhoh comes from her lips before she
grins a little awkwardly and hurries past towards the grounds
themselves
for a look at the eggs she's heard rumor of.
Aerion heads into the tunnel to the east, into the Hatching Grounds.
Aerion has left.
Alarian comes into the Bowl through the Pass.
Alarian has arrived.
Alarian heads into the tunnel to the east, into the Hatching Grounds.
Alarian has left.
Not only frightenings the runners but Joshi as well who turns a shade
paler. There's the safety of the stables. "Uh...." Joshi looks at
K'than,
an almost helpless look in her eyes. "I gotta feed the runners." The
easy
way out - neither saying yes or no - and getting away from a scrutinous
eye of the green, by disappearing into the stables.
Joshi ambles towards the stables.
Joshi has left.
Jalar hrms, "She dodged that question nicely."
Sekhmet flits over from the stables.
Sekhmet has arrived.
K'than drops his bundle of leathers and plants his hands on his hips,
staring at Ryeth. The green sort of hunches down a little and croons
hopefully, causing her rider to laugh and bend to pick up his flying
gear
again. He glances around the area and grins weakly at the Harper.
"Yeah.
Well, I'll just have to go talk to her I guess," he observes, and
marches
into the stables after Joshi.
You head north towards the Weyr's stables.
Stables(#3359RAL)
Igen's stables are set somewhat apart from the rest of the Weyr as much
as
it is possible to do so. The stables really has two parts to it. The
interior portion is a large narrow cavern hollowed out of the bowl's
bare
rock wall. Stalls inside are strong and sturdy, with stone breaks
between
them. Immense beams hold up the loft area, and a few straws of hay
occasionally drift to the floor below. The exterior is a paddock area,
more or less. Largely suitable for only mounting and dismounting, and
to
provide the runners with a little of exercise space, the corral there
usually has some runners in it. The ground and stone rock both inside
and
outside the stables are streaked with black, hinting at a great fire
sometime in its past.
Ryeth> Alarian comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the
Hatching Grounds.
Ryeth> Alarian has arrived.
Ryeth> Alarian comes back in from the hatching grounds, having rushed
to
see how many had been laid. She hugs herself, eyes down as she passes
through
Joshi is already standing at the tack tables near the bins that hold
the
grains. She's got a bucket, scooping grains into it. If she's aware of
any
one else's presence she gives no signal, not looking up as she pours
the
grains from a scooper, into the bucket.
Ryeth> Jalar smiles to the young lady, "Harper's duties, but please do
excuse me. I need to go help out a rider."
Ryeth> Jalar ambles towards the stables.
Ryeth> Jalar has left.
Jalar comes over from the Weyrling Training Field.
Jalar has arrived.
Ryeth> Alarian blinks and looks up, not having seen anyone.
Ryeth> Alarian strides towards the center of the Bowl.
Ryeth> Alarian has left.
K'than blinks at the Harper, and then carefully moves to put himself in
front of the door so Joshi can't escape again. "Joshi," he begins, and
then hesitates. "I'm sorry she bugled like that. She's kind of an
exciteable sort," he apologizes.
Jalar strides in, with a touch of a limp, whistles The Duty Song as he
arrives. He leans up against a wall and pulls out a stick from a pocket
and a knife from his belt. He begins looking over the stick.
Ryeth> Ryeth settles herself down to stare with her head pointing at
the
stable doors, a bit like a feline waiting for prey.
"I don't want to talk about it," Joshi's scooping becomes harder as she
dumps grains in. She doesn't look up at K'than again. The grain bin lid
closes with a slam and she walks over to a runner's stall, holding the
bucket out so the runner can stick it's head out to get some grain. She
helps it by scooping it in her hand and holding it to its nose to munch
on.
Jalar whistles The Duty Song again, breaking into lyrics at "Honor
those
the Dragons heed." He finally puts the knife blade to the stick and
trims
just a touch away.
K'than glances at Jalar and then sighs, leaning back against the door
and
stuffing his hands in his pockets. "I'm really sorry, Joshi," he says
with
difficulty. "But will you Stand? Please?"
Joshi gives an annoyed glance at the harper, whistling. The runner
continues to get her attention, as she pats him and feeds him.
"K'than,"
Joshi turns to look at him, "I know you can't understand my feelings,
but.." she points at Jalar. "I don't want to end up like that." The
scarred leg is the fixation of her index finger's point. "And it could
happen.. after what she did..."
Jalar catches the gesture and glances down at his leg then over at the
woman, "If you don't want to wind up like this, then my advice it stay
away from pregnant herdbeast." He goes back to his whitling and
whistling.
K'than winces, and offers a hurried explanation, "My dragon... any
dragon,
when it's first hatched, before it Impresses, it can harm a candidate
on
the sands. It happens. And Joshi..." he looks back at her and sighs.
"She
didn't mean to! And it didn't! And the chances of it happening again
are... I can't even imagine how slim."
"I know she didn't mean to," Joshi sighs. She looks up at the stable
ceiling and shakes her head, "My head tells me that and they warn us."
She
looks at K'than, "But now you.. you - AND- her are asking me to do that
again." For some reason that seems very funny, because she starts to
laugh, though it's not really funny.
Jalar begins to clue in a bit and joins in the laughing, "Oh, you must
be
the one who had that unfortunate incident at the last Hatching here.
And I
go through life trying not to be afraid of dragons even though they've
never been anything but good to me." He slides the knife into it's belt
case.
Ryeth> Just overhead, Kobeth glides down cautiously.
Ryeth> Just overhead, Kobeth flies carefully towards the main entrance.
Ryeth> N'lan comes along from the field outside the main entrance to
the
south.
Ryeth> N'lan has arrived.
K'than stares at Joshi a moment like he thinks she's lost her mind, and
then he starts to laugh, too. "It... it sounds like a tale!" he manages
after a moment. "Like poetic justice, doesn't it? Come on, Joshi. What
do
you do when a runner throws you?" he entreats.
Ryeth> Ryeth is still crouched by the stables, staring fixedly at the
door. There are a couple runners in the corral eyeing her nervously and
sweating.
Ryeth> N'lan frowns curiously at Ryeth, then looks over towards the
stables. "What's up?" he asks the green.
Joshi stops laughing after a moment. "That is not fair K'than. Not fair
at
all." She lifts a hand to her head, as if fighting her thoughts. She
turns
to feed the runner more grain, after he's thrown his head at her a few
times for more treats. "You get back on it, so you're not afraid of
runners." Reverse psychology - make the party feel guilty
Ryeth> Kobeth senses that Ryeth relays after a moment's thought, << I
want
her, and she ran in there! >>
Ryeth> N'lan nods wisely. "Ahh. Well, it _is_ that time of turn. Happy
hunting." He smiles, and heads for the hatching galleries.
Ryeth> N'lan heads into the tunnel to the east, into the Hatching
Grounds.
Ryeth> N'lan has left.
Jalar smiles and speaks in a slow voice, "So go back out on the Sands
so
you'll not be afraid of dragons. You're wanted and you're needed."
K'than sighs and passes a hand over his head, making his hair stick out
in
all directions. "Please? We've never searched anybody before," he begs.
Jalar adds, "You'll have quite a few sevendays to get used to the
idea."
Ryeth> Just overhead, Hicerth glides down cautiously.
Ryeth> Just overhead, Hicerth flies carefully towards the main
entrance.
It may be Jalar's advice more than K'than's request that appeals to
her,
something to prove. "K'than...." Her voice is a little whiny, mostly as
if
asking him to let her off some hook. She bites her lip and then says,
"Alright." She glances at Jalar and then back to K'than. "But I'm only
doing this because I'm /NOT/ scared of dragons." So she says -- at
least
not adult dragons - except Ryeth.
K'than beams so widely it looks like he might strain some facial
muscle.
"Great!" he exclaims, throwing a grateful glance at Jalar. "Thanks
Joshi."
Ryeth> Keller comes along from the field outside the main entrance to
the
south.
Ryeth> Keller has arrived.
Ryeth> Keller ambles towards the stables.
Ryeth> Keller has left.
Keller comes over from the Weyrling Training Field.
Keller has arrived.
Jalar claps and whistles, "Congratulations! I was wondering how soon
the
first Candidate would be Searched." He steps forward, "Oh, and Harper's
duties. I'm Jalar. You must be Joshi and K'than, if I've heard aright."
K'than beams cheerfully- he can't seem to stop- and holds out his hand.
"That's right. Well met."
Keller strolls in and starts checking the stalls.
"Uh yes, well met," Joshi doesn't look as happy as K'than, but then
she's
just agreed to stand in front of the hungry dragonets again. Not a
great
prospect. Her eyes go to Keller for a moment and she says, "Can I help
you?" He's a stranger to these particular stalls -- at least to her.
Keller bows slightly. "No thank you ma'am. Just making my rounds, and
checkin to see if the runners need any more bedding."
Keller stops and looks around. "Am I interrupting something? I could
come
back, later?"
Ryeth> Kobeth comes along from the field outside the main entrance to
the
south.
Ryeth> Kobeth has arrived.
Joshi looks at Keller and then his shoulder, which is knotless. "You
live
here?" She questions. "The runners have plenty of bedding."
Ryeth> Just overhead, Perseith flies out into the air from the Hatching
Grounds.
Ryeth> Just overhead, Perseith glides over to the training field.
Ryeth> Perseith backwings to land neatly.
Ryeth> Perseith has arrived.
Ryeth> Ryeth is /still/ crouched, staring at the stables door, but she
somehow looks very pleased with herself.
Jalar smiles widely, "Well all talk more, of that I'm sure. But for
now,
I've some unpacking to do." He steps toward the exit and turns around,
"Congratulations, again." That said, he turns around and walks out.
Keller shrugs. "I haven't been granted permanent residency yet, but
Weyrwoman Sarai, has graciously been letting me lend a hand, and I came
from Keroon beasthold, originally, and have some expoerience with
runners."
Jalar leaves the stables, heading towards the Weyrling Training Field.
Jalar has left.
Ryeth> Jalar ambles over from the stables.
Ryeth> Jalar has arrived.
Ryeth> Jalar heads south to the main entrance.
Ryeth> Jalar has left.
Ryeth> Ryeth lifts her head as soon as someone exits the stables, and
then
looks seriously disappointed at who it is.
Keller says " SOmetimes spend my nights here, keeping Rav and the
runners
company.""
Joshi nods. "Alright then," she seems to agree to that. "Take good care
of
my babies then." She gives a glance around the stable. "I'll see you
boys
and girls when I can." This promised to her beloveds.
K'than waves after Jalar and remains grinning foolishly. "I don't spose
you've got your old robe stored away somewhere?" he asks Joshi as he
turns
sort of toward the door.
Keller says "No problem ma'am. I'm good with runners. I take good care
of
em."
Joshi looks nervous. "Uh not exactly K'than. I may have survived but my
robe isn't exactly what it used to be. It's rather... hole-y right
now."
She looks away.
K'than loses his grin. "Oh... right..." he looks embarassed. "Well, no
worry. I'm sure we'll be getting in a supply of appropriate fabric,
soon."
Keller turns back to checking the stalls, and occasionally reaching up
to
scratch an ear, or scrub his hand over a forelock.
Ryeth> T'jas comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the
Hatching
Grounds.
Ryeth> T'jas has arrived.
Joshi nods. "Maybe we should go," she says, "I'm familiar with the
rules
so you don't have to tell them to me."
Ryeth> Rilor comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the
Hatching
Grounds.
Ryeth> Rilor has arrived.
Ryeth> Rilor follows T'jas, "Alright, Sir. I'm coming."
K'than nods. "I don't think I'm supposed to, anyway," he tells Joshi.
"They want everyone to hear the rules from the source so no one gets
mixed
up, now." He pulls the door open and steps through it.
Ryeth> N'lan comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the
Hatching
Grounds.
Ryeth> N'lan has arrived.
You leave the stables and head towards the Weyrling Training Field.

N'lan nods to T'jas and Rilor as he passes by.
Joshi ambles over from the stables.
Joshi has arrived.
N'lan heads south to the main entrance.
N'lan has left.
Perseith warbles cheerfully as he spies T'jas, stretching his wings out
to
demonstrate his eagerness. "Yeah, yeah. We can start in the Reaches,
Perseith. C'mon. I didn't catch your name?" That last is to Rilor as
T'jas
grabs hold of Perseith's straps.
Ryeth gives only one curious glance to the others passing by, her gaze
remaining fixed on the stables. When K'than and then Joshi appear, she
lifts her head and unfolds her wings and raises herself up and...
K'than
shoots her a *look*, and she doesn't bugle. Deflating, she settles for
a
pleased croon, instead.
Aerion comes out from the gaping entrance that leads to the Hatching
Grounds.
Aerion has arrived.
Rilor grins, wryly, "Or I yours. I'm Rilor, but most everyone at High
Reaches calls me 'Ri.'"
Joshi looks at Ryeth, noting her control. "She's getting better." She
leaves it at that, not wanting to comment too much on the dragon she
has
feared for a while. She stays close to the other side of K'than away
from
the green.
T'jas grins. "Well met," he says as he clambers up to his blue's
shoulders.
T'jas climbs up to Perseith's shoulders, sitting carefully between two
of
*his* blue's neckridges.
T'jas has left.
Atop Perseith's shoulders, T'jas adds belatedly, "I'm T'jas. This's
Perseith."
Rilor smiles and approaches Perseith, "Well met, T'jas. Well met
Perseith,
will you let me come on up?"
Perseith warbles impatiently. T'jas calls down, "Climb on up!"
Rilor climbs to Perseith's shoulder, with help from both T'jas and the
blue himself.
Rilor has left.
Keller ambles over from the stables.
Keller has arrived.
Atop Perseith's shoulders, T'jas grins. "I'll bet you c'n strap
yourself
in," he comments as he fastens his own straps. Perseith turns his head
to
look at the pair on his back.
Joshi strides towards the center of the Bowl.
Joshi has left.
Keller heads south to the main entrance.
Keller has left.
Atop Perseith's shoulders, Rilor looks around and finds the straps,
"Yeah.
Been adrgaonback a time or two before." He grins.
You stride towards the center of the Bowl.
You head over towards the field to the southeast.
Ryeth walks over from the center of the bowl.
Ryeth has arrived.
Aerion walks over from the center of the bowl.
Aerion has arrived.
You walk down the long, winding path to the Inner Caverns.
Ryeth> Aerion heads through the main entrance, into the Weyr's Living
Cavern.
Ryeth> Aerion has left.
Joshi strides in from the Living Caverns.
Joshi has arrived.
Joshi strides into the Candidates' Barracks.
Joshi has left.
You stride into the Candidates' Barracks.
K'than looks around the barracks with a sort of nostaligic air. "Well.
You
know the ropes, I guess, and where everything is. Will you be alright?"
Joshi nods. "I do," she says. "And I will." She's determined to prove
she's not scared.
K'than hesitates a moment longer then. "Well, I'll leave you to it,
then.
You should have company soon enough." He waves, and heads out.
Ryeth> Kobeth ambles in from the northern part of the bowl.
Ryeth> Kobeth has arrived.
You wend your way out to the Inner Caverns.
