| Ethnic labeling has to stop. Especially when the labels are incorrect nomenclatures. Even though they live in America, Americans never want to say they�re just American, they have to have something in front of the American e.g. Italian-American, Irish-American, or the worst one yet a Puerto Rican-American! Puerto Rico is a commonwealth to the United States of America meaning the only difference it has to a state is that it doesn�t follow federal laws or pay federal taxes. That�s like a guy from Salt Lake City calling himself a Utah-American. By definition, the only way you can be a something-American is by being born in another country and then gaining American citizenship. Where your ancestors or parents come from has no influence on your title as an American at all. That�s why I hate how nowadays black people prefer to be called African-Americans. Just because at one time your family was in Africa doesn�t mean you carry that identity with you after being gone 500 years. Jamaica has a high black population too, do they call themselves African-Jamaicans? Seriously, this is getting way out of hand. Especially when Latinos go at it over which is the better �nationality�. A nationality is defined as a place of birth or naturalization. That means if you�re born and lived there your entire life in America , even if your parents are Colombian, you are an American. Like the United States Of America, Latino countries were places where Europeans immigrated to also. Despite most Latin-American countries doing a better job of preserving the cultures of the tribes that lived there before the immigrants than the United States did, being from a Latino country doesn�t necessarily mean that your family carries one of those bloodlines. That makes the bickering amongst people of Latino descent pointless since a Guatemalan can have the same French Great Great Grandfather as a Costa Rican. If people would only read history and think before making some shit-headed comment regarding race we wouldn�t have half of these problems. People have so much pride in their heritage they�re too proud to look it up. If anyone was offended by what I said, fuck you! |
