| A question I get frequently from people who visit my website is what I have against Black Metal. To be honest, my problem with Black Metal isn�t just with the music itself, but the entire image of the genre. Musically it�s really not that bad. It�s not something that I could listen to all day, but if I were to be in a car with someone who was listening to Emperor, I wouldn�t go insane like I would if I were to here Paul McCartney�s �Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time� song. Despite how much I like Mortiis, Emperor is a pretty clever band. They�re not the stereotypical metal band that just plays loud chords indiscriminately while screaming obscenities into a microphone. I wouldn�t say that they�re musical geniuses, or that they�re talented musicians, but for what they do, they�re pretty good. Again, Black Metal is not my choice of music, but I do try to look at all types of music for what they are and keep my prejudices out of it. Of course, when I make fun of the music, that�s when my prejudices are put to use. But Emperor is just a band. They make music for a living and I assume they go home and live their own personal lives. My problem, however, is with the bands who take it beyond music; the bands who think that Black Metal is a way of life. There are metal bands that apply their hateful lyrics to real life. A perfect example is Jon from Dissection. He was convicted of killing a man in Sweden just because he was a homosexual. I�m not at all homophobic, but the number of total recognized Black Metal bands in the world has to be over 500. With an average of four members for each band, that comes out to about 2,000 people. Are we seriously supposed to believe that they�re all heterosexual? If Halford is one, then by logic there has to be more. Killing a man just because he�s gay is not going to insure your heterosexuality. In fact, displaying your homophobia in a violent manner is more of a gesture indicating that you�re a closet case homosexual than if you were to just allow gays to live in peace. It�s not just homosexuals that are becoming victims of Black Metal influenced violence. Bands that are part of the (National Socialist Black Metal) are devoted to ridding the world of Christians, Jews, and all non-whites. Nearly all of the church burnings that happen in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are usually the works of bands, or followers of bands, from the NSBM. There have also been reports of Christians from those countries being brutally beaten by metal heads for no apparent reason other than their choice to believe in God. I�m not a religious person; I don�t even believe in God, but someone has the right to believe whatever he or she wants to, provided that they don�t hurt anyone. If you look at the lyrics of some of these bands, such as Graveland, their reasons for hating Christians and Jews is because they moved into their �fatherland� roughly 2,000 years ago and, �Christianity burnt our temples and replaced them with their miserable cowsheds! possessed christians (sic) baptized our lands, forests,rivers and people!� Boo-fucking-hoo, Rob Darken. You act as if you actually lived through it. Fortunately you weren�t born until about 1,900 years after it all happened and nobody gave a petrified shit anymore. And his answer to Christians burning �his� churches is to burn THEIR churches in return! Amazing! The very thing that has pissed him off will be his weapon in redemption for the loss. Isn�t this man versatile? The rest of his descriptive Faulkner-like writings go on to say: |
