A Brief History of the Town of Greeneville. Greeneville, Tennessee, was established in 1783, and is the second oldest town in Tennessee. Greeneville is, to my knowledge, the only "Greenville" in the United States to be spelled with a "e" at the end of green. Greeneville was named after Revolutionary War General Nathaniel Greene. This beautiful country town, located at the feet of the Appalachian mountains, is the birthplace of famed pioneer Davy Crocket. Andrew Johnson, the 17th president, moved to Greeneville and started a tailor shop, which still stands in historic downtown Greeneville. Greeneville is also the home of actress Park Overall. There are many fascinating historic buildings in Greeneville and Greene County, such as the General Morgan Inn, the Earnest Fort House, Earnest Farm House, and the Dickson-Williams Mansion.
