About 5,000 years ago there was a nation of korean in 'far east' area. The name of the nation was Cho Sun. Cho Sun was very big and strong. However unfortunatly the nation was destroied by china.(BC.108)
After the collapse of the nation, the period of the three kingdoms was started. The three kingdoms (Kokuryeo, BaeckJe, and Silla)were conflict with one another.(BC 4C ~ AD 7C)
In this period Mahayana Buddhism of China and Confucianism transmited to korea and each kingdom encourage the religions. During the time korean people met the religious system.
After 1,000 years later roman catholic and protestnat churches came to Korea. It occurred in the western imperialistic period.
Korean people questioned to western people. "We have two religions already. What for, we have to believe in another religion? "
Roman catholic and protestant said to korean people. "We mission to you not religion but Gospel. Gospel is only one."
The last kingdom of korea suppressed Gospel. Many people died a martyr for their faith(Gospel).
Now there are10,000,000 persons who are christian in korea.(Roman catholic: 2,000,000 / Protestant: 8,000,000)Especially under the influance of charismatic movement they can grow in population rapidly.Anglican church and Roman catholic accepted the movement. Roman catholic of korea has taken a role of light.
But after IMF, mamonism is spread into Korean society. Look at the tremendous varity of so-called 'church' in korea. Orthodox church christians are observing the wrong flow -so called 'church mamonism' and don't hurry for orthodox mission. We ere doing our work gradually. We translate liturgia from russian , english, greek to korean. And we're studying mystirions. Due to the ignorance of the existance of orthodox church, many korean people could not be an orthodox church christian.
Korea is muiti-religious society. It considerd for orthodox mission to claim to stand for the redemption of Jesus Christ. There are many churches in korea. If we place the focus on church it means that we are preaching for so called 'church business'. We have to focus on Gospel. |
