Home Up Faust Production Faust Cast

The Prologue consisted of Faust studio the left and to the right what appeared to be the village far away. The direction here was very good with nice touches to it, when Faust renounces God and calls Satan throwing the wine on the floor, there is small explosion and Mephistopheles appears but here is the nice touch: Mephistopheles appears dressed and looking alike Faust. So, when he asks Faust: "Ou vient ta surprise?" (Why are you surprised?) It makes a whole lot of sense. This is a very good example on how a traditional staging works as well as non-traditional ones. Also, when Mephistopheles asks Faust what he wants and Faust at first says nothing but later gives in and starts claiming for Youth, while he is singing, Mephistopheles' mimics him implying that in fact Mephistopheles is already pulling the strings on Faust.

Act I had the weakest set. It did not work really. There was a wall to the left, on the far center a small stage where a troupe of three actors (Adam, Eve and the Devil) performed while Faust courted Marguerite, and to the right the wine barrel. There were some trees that looked shabby. Here I think Urzan made his only mistake by having Marguerite appear when her brother is on stage and sings his big aria ("Avant de quitte ce lieux") to her. This spoils the music and the scene because Marguerite should appear only later when Valentin (her brother) has already let and the score indicates very clearly the moment when Marguerite should appear.

Act II was beautiful with a big wall to the left, a small garden house in the far center and another wall with a door to the right. The trees now looked much nicer because the lightning was better. Here there were some nice touches too such as when Marguerite tells of her sadness because her small sister died, she tells it not to Faust but to Mephistopheles who disguises as Faust.

Act III, First Scene was correct with walls to both sides of the stage, a crib for Marguerite's son. The duel scene was staged correctly too. Act III, second scene on the church was superb. There were gothic walls to both sides and cross on the center with Jesus but the difference was that Jesus was alive (and black). On the walls, there what looked like white statues of Saints but once Mephistopheles starts cursing Marguerite took life form and started moving. There were monks too that transformed into demons also. There were some nice touches again such as Mephistopheles blessing Marguerite's child (but disguised as a Monk) and also trading place with Jesus on the cross! The scene ended with Mephistopheles taking Marguerite's son in his arms (presumably that is when the baby dies). Act III, scene three (Walpurgis Night) was very good also, the right wall rotated and transformed into the place where the goddesses try to lure Faust.

Act IV was very simple just a small wall to the center where Marguerite was chained to and a huge metal fence (that indicated she was in jail). But the direction was supreme, Marguerite is now bald (only when Kaduce sang) and totally nuts, when she finally renounces Faust and is saved the fence lifts to Heaven and a white beaming light indicates she has been saved. Perfect !
