Many were the Romany folki who were transported for various crimes, I thought I would add a few of them here.
John Budd "Jack" Gray
Baptised at March, Cambridgeshire 16th February 1798, the son of Thomas Gray and Susannah Faben, Jack Gray was presumably a handsome fellow, as he had several wives. He was known to have been married to or liased with: Maria Boswell (who also married Job Williams), Uri "Waddi" Heron (who also married Leonard Printall), Eliza Heron (who also married Oseri Gray), and Harriet Williams. The Old Rais who recorded this information were unaware of course, of Jacks fate once he was transported. He married again, the final time to Frances Dowlin(g) in Tasmania.

By Maria Boswell he had a son John(ny) Gray who married Vashti "Wasti" Lee.
By Uri "Waddi" Heron he had Caroline who married Thomas Gray.
By her sister Eliza Heron he had Frank "Knivela" (probably Francis) Gray who married Mori Gray,
and Sonny Gray b.cir 1827 who married Frances Emma Mann.
By Harriet Williams he had Eliza "Wikki" Gray (b.cir 1832) who married Joseph Elliott,
and Isabella "Bella" Gray (b.cir 1843) who married Edward Heron (aka Young).

John Budd, "Jack" Gray was transported to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) for 12 years, after being convicted of stealing two mare horses, the, property of Jane Blades, at Hameringham, Lincs, at the Lincolnshire Assizes 20.07.1844.
Elias Boss, son of Riley was convicted of the same crime, with the lesser term of 10 years.
Both men were transported on board the "Sir Robert Peel" which sailed from London 09.09.1844 and arrived on Boxing Day, 26.12.1844 with 254 male passengers aboard.

John Budd Gray was recorded as applying for permission to marry the free lady, Frances Dowlan/Dowlin(g) 27.03.1849 and their children were:

<unknown> Gray b.31.01.1849 Hobart, Tasmania
Israel Gray c.27.03.1853 Buckingham, Hobart, Tasmania, d.1904
Charles John Gray c.20.12.1851 Hobart Town, Tasmania d.1879
John Gray b.1853 Geelong, Victoria, Australia
Parmoss Gray b.cir 1855 Buckingham, Hobart, Tasmania
Angelina Gray b.cir 1858 Buckingham, Hobart, Tasmania

Alexander Thomas Gray b.1863 Geelong, Victoria, Australia
George Francis Gray c.15.06.1866, Chilwell, Geelong, Victoria, Australia d.1931

John Budd Gray was granted a Ticket of Leave (pardon) 1852/3 and he moved to Geelong, Victoria, Australia sometime between 1858 and 1861 as can be seen by the births of his children.
He died 30.08.1868 in Australia.

His son, Charles John Gray m.26.06.1871 Caroline Leeman Spivey, at Pitfield, Victoria, Australia and they had:

Ellen Gray 1873 Pitfield, Victoria
Charles William Gray 1875 Pitfield, Victoria
Samuel Gray b.1871 Pitfield Victoria d.23.12.1906 Melbourne, Victoria Buried Springvale, Victoria.
George Gray b.1878 Stra., Victoria, Australia.

Samuel Gray married Mary Ann Norris. B.1874 Melbourne d. Jun1906 Melbourne. Their child was:

Samuel John Gray b.16.11.1893 Melbourne, d.29.09.1957 Heidelburg, Victoria.
Married Catherine Dodd 28.01.1919 St Marylebone London England.
She b.21.02.1900 Marylebone London, d.26.11.1967 Newport Victoria Australia. D/o James Dodd and Mary Shaughnessey.

Which proves that Samuel John Gray made at least one visit to England.
Elias "Goliah" Boss
Goliah Boss was baptised 20.04.1826 at Sudbourne, Suffolk, the son of Riley Boss aka James Vanis/James Heron/William Boss, and his wife Charlotte Hammond. He was ever after as far as I am aware, called Elias Boss.

At only 17 years of age, he found himself being convicted of stealing two mare horses, the property of Jane Blades, at Hameringham, Lincolnshire, at the Lincolnshire Assizes 20.07.1844, with the above John Budd (Jack) Gray. He was sentenced to transportation to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania) for the term of ten years. They sailed from London on the "Sir Robert Peel" 09.09.1844, which arrived on 26.12.1844 with 254 male passengers on board.

Elias Boss was recorded as marrying Frances Bonney in 1857, in Deloraine Tasmania. Their known children were:

1862 Deliah Mary married Albert John Watson
1864 Caroline Lavinia Boss bn at Port Sorell
1866 Elias Sylvester Boss bn at Port Sorell
1868 Lapoleons Rebi Charles Boss bn at Port Sorell
1871 May Ellie Rubina Boss bn at Port Sorell

In 1909 he was listed in Sands Directory as a contractor of Lyndhurst.
Elias Boss died in Newtown Hobart,  5th July 1919 at the age of 93, and was buried at Don Congregational Cemetery

A fitting Epitaph I have shamelessly copied is as follows:

The Dead Stockrider (By the Wild Irishman)

Aye, we had a glorious gallop after Starlight and his gang
As they bolted from Sylvesters on the flat.
How the sun-dried reed-beds crackled.
How the flint-strewn ranges rang,
To the strokes of Mountaineer and Acrobat!
L. Gordon.

It is now many years ago since I first became acquainted with the late Mr. Elias Boss, who years ago was one of the most noted stock-riders and horse-breakers in our island. Many were the slashing gallops that the old man could relate and many the white-faced Herefords who were forced to wheel about face from the deadly fire of his stock whip. I once heard the old gentleman say that he never knew what fear meant, and I believed him, for, if he did, he never showed it. There was no yellow streak about the old fellow. He was as game as a gamecock. I once saw him, when 75 years of age, win the hunting contest at the Latrobe Show, and I should like to know if the performance has ever been equalled in Australia, before or since? Here was a man who was a celebrity on this Coast, and we see him pass out unhonoured and unsung! Yet, if some silver tail or hot-house plant slings a seven, if he happens to stand behind Macarthy to the tune of a thousand pounds or two, we read goodness knows how much about his career, and probably his money was his greatest recommendation! It is some years now since I made my first contribution to The Advocate, and when I did I resolved to try to remedy something that appeared to be either neglected or forgotten that is, to give honour to whom honour is due. Hence my infliction upon readers If I succeed in doing this I will be satisfied; Well, poor old Mr. Boss has left us at the ripe age of 93 years. His wild stock-riding career has finished, and he sleeps his last long sleep near the placid waters of Cornelian Bay. Id just as soon take old Elias Boss chance of an entrance to the Golden City as I would of any professor of Church-ianity who ever sang a Psalm, and in the words of Gordons dying stock-rider:
For deeds undone and gifts misspent and resolution vain,
Its a little late to worry this, I know.
And Id live the same life over if I had to live again,
And the chances are Id go where most men go.
The Advocate 25th July 1919
