| Skills/Support: | Howdy, all!
I identify as a survivor of a mental health system,
that for all its good intentions, has caused me more trauma. I have
forged forward on my road to recovery by using the support of my peers, by
educating myself about self-help, by creating a Wellness Recovery
Action Plan, by working in the mental health consumer community.
In my role at work I offer a series of trainings (summaries of which
are available at the NYAPRS site) to providers of mental health services
that are designed to expand the traditional medical model view of
people who suffer from psychiatric discomfort from focusing on the symptoms
that a person is experiencing to the recovery view which allows for
appreciating the person in the context of his life. If the mantra of the
medical model is "stabilize and maintain," the mantra of the recovery
view could be "stabilize, maintain and move on." Once I am stable, I
can better be directed on how to assess my needs and learn the skills I
need to move forward with my life.
While I represent NYC, NYAPRS has 5 educators strategically placed
around the state to help guide providers of mental health services through
this process. You can call me directly to schedule a training in NYC,
or 518 436 0008 to schedule a training in another part of the state.
As a peer advocate, I spent 4 years setting up self-help/mutual support
groups because I believe that the power of sharing our experiences, the
benefit of knowing "I am not alone in my angst - others react
similarly" is tremendously healing.
I am currently putting together a book/workbook that will focus on
understanding how the behaviors that get in our way could possibly be the
result of trauma. I feel that understanding trauma and its residual
effect is integral to continued progress in the field of mental health
recovery. If this sounds interesting to you, please give me a call or
drop me an email because the book will be comprised of contributions from
consumers. |
