First Daughter Raising Helen Raising Helen Closer Crash Unleashed |
"Samantha wears clothes that inspire Joan Rivers monologues on TV, she sits in a roped-off section of lecture classes, flanked by Secret Service agents, and she is thoroughly miserable. So she stages a revolt that is painfully awkward in its conception and execution, pretending to be a bad girl, so the president will hear her cry for help. Her first transgression is to slide down a hill on a wet tarp at a frat party, which gets her on the front page of the New York Post, a paper more easily shocked in this movie than in life. Her slide seems to me like a plus (first daughter is real kid, has harmless fun), but no: She gets a scolding, and then she gets a severe scolding when Mia talks her into attending another party dressed, so help me, like a go-go dancer in the days when the words "go-go" were being used. (High white lace-up boots, denim miniskirt, pink fur pimp hat, the works.) Realizing Samantha is serious about wanting more privacy, or maybe fearing that she will in desperation pose for Playboy if he doesn't relent, the president agrees to pull back her Secret Service detail." "Jenny's house, Helen observes, looks like a showroom at the Pottery Barn." "Their sister Lindsay (Felicity Huffman) and her husband are killed in an accident, and in her will, Lindsay leaves custody of her small son and daughter, not to Jenny the perfect homemaker, but to Helen the fast-track girl. How can this be? Helen and Jenny are both appalled, but Helen takes on the task of raising little Henry and Sarah, played by real-life siblings Spencer and Abigail Breslin." "More time passes. Dan, who has been with Anna, impersonates a woman named "Anna" on a chat line, and sets up a date with Larry, a stranger." "The Iranian can't understand what the locksmith is trying to tell him, freaks out, and buys a gun to protect himself." "Danny falls into their lives by accident, after running away from Bart, as a dog is likely to do when it becomes fed up with its master." |
.Samantha demands more privacy after going to a pool party where her bodyguards take down another student with a water gun. This actually precedes both the water slide and go-go dancer scenes (the latter of which where she was dressed up as Pamela Anderson with her roommate dressed as Kid Rock, *not* a go-go dancer). In the latter scene (which occurs near the end of the movie), she is actually acting out of hurt and an effort to upset her love interest by whom she feels very hurt. Helen says this about her sister Lindsays house. There are *three* children: Kindergartener, Sarah, pre-adolescent, Henry, and their teen-aged sister, Audrey. At this point in the movie, Dan has only kissed Anna and then been turned away by her after she finds out that he is living with Alice. The gun is purchased before the store owner makes any attempt to change the locks on the door. (It was referenced that the gun was purchased due to a situation in the store not shown in the movie where the man felt his wifes life had been in jeopardy.) Danny leaves his master only when he believes he has been shot and killed. |
