| EBERT ERRORS |
Below you will find examples of errors from the reviews of Roger Ebert. All quotes are taken directly from Ebert's own web page. Please note that the list is continuously growing (especially since I was noticing errors for at least a year-and-a-half before I started documenting them), so be sure to check back for additional entries! Please also note that, based on reader feedback, I have restructured this page a little bit. Here I have included the most trivial errors with misnamed characters and errors based on dates and ages and so on. (Although these errors may seem irrelevant to some, I still choose to include them because they speak to an overall lack of attention to detail and apparent efforts to 'fake it' that I feel is representative of Ebert's overall performance.
Be warned: This page may contain spoilers.
Am I perfect? Absolutely not. As I am not taking notes while watching these movies, it's entirely possible that *I* could be wrong (though I don't think so). E-mail me if you think I am! I have also begun including errors cited by other individuals on the web. When I do this, I will include the source info. |
| EBERT'S 1st DEGREE ERRORS |
|---|
| FILM TITLE | WHAT EBERT SAID | WHAT REALLY HAPPENED |
|---|
| Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) | "Precinct 13, in this version, is scheduled to close forever at midnight. Burnt-out desk sergeant Jake Fornick (Ethan Hawke)," | The characters name is Jake Roenick. |
|---|
| Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) | "Jake's psychiatrist Alex Sabian (Maria Bello) comes to visit, leaves for home, has to return to the station because of the Dark, etc.," | She leaves for a New Years Party as indicated by a detailed conversation regarding why she is dressed as she is... |
|---|
| Cinderella Man (2005) | "He steals a sausage from a butcher shop, is caught, and then, in a scene typical of Braddock's gentle wisdom, is not punished by his father, but talked to, softly and earnestly, because his father instinctively knows why his son stole the sausage, and that the kid's daring was almost noble" | Its Salami and Braddock figures out why his son stole it because his son essentially tells him. |
|---|
| Constantine (2005) | "The angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton) tells him, "You are going to die young because you've smoked 30 cigarettes a day since you were 13."" | She said 15, not 13. |
|---|
| Fever Pitch (2005) | "Their first date begins unpromisingly, with food poisoning and Lindsey hurling into a garbage can. | They dont really show what Lindsey is throwing up in, however, the fact that Lindsey is shown running to the bathroom, and Ben is later shown cleaning up around the toilet suggests thats what she threw up in. Ben does provide Lindsey with not a trash can, but a laundry basket for emergency hurling if she needs it while in bed, but there is no suggestion that she ever uses it. |
|---|
| Finding Neverland (2004) | "The only holdout is Peter, the oldest, played by Freddie Highmore in a remarkable performance; if Barrie never grew up, Peter was perhaps never a child. | Peter is neither the youngest nor the eldest of the Llewelyn Davies family. |
|---|
| The Forgotten (2004) | "The Forgotten" is not a good movie, but at least it supplies a credible victim. Julianne Moore plays Telly Paretta, a mother who for 14 months has mourned her 9-year-old son, Sam. | Sam is 8 not 9. (I am a little less sure of this error than some of the others, but did verify my own memory of Sams age with imdb.com which did confirm his age as being 8.) |
|---|
NEW! Hustle & Flow (2005) | "The dream of the demo record fills his mind -- and also obsesses Key and Shelby, to the dismay of Key's wife, who sees her churchgoing breadwinner spending his free time with a pimp ("What woman wouldn't be thrilled to have her man in a house full of whores?"). | If youre going to make a direct quote, it should not be whitewashed with your own language: She says hos not whores. |
|---|
| Labyrinth (1986) | "One of the key characters in this film is Toby (played by Toby Froud). Froud is a midget who has been given a Muppet head to wear.. | Toby is the baby brother. Presumably, Ebert is referring to Hoggle. |
|---|
NEW! King Arthur (2004) | "To the line "Last night was a mistake" in "Troy," we can now add, in our anthology of unlikely statements in history, Arthur's line to Guinevere as his seven warriors prepare to do battle on a frozen lake with hundreds if not thousands of Saxons: 'There are a lot of lonely men over there.' | "Roger Ebert screws up on this one... In an unexplainable mistake... yes, the line is awkward, but there's another problem: It was Lancelot who said it, not Arthur." R Hailey @ http://shotsacrossthebow.com/archives/002044.html |
|---|
| Laurel Canyon (2003) | "A sexual free spirit from her early days, she is currently producing an album with a British rock singer named Ian (Alessandro Nivola) who is 20 years younger and her lover. | Hes 16 years younger, as stated clearly by McDormands character in a scene with Nivola. |
|---|
| Raising Helen (2004) | "Jenny's house, Helen observes, looks like a showroom at the Pottery Barn. | Helen says this about her sister Lindsays house. |
|---|
NEW! Skeleton Key (2005) TH> | "Hoodoo, we learn is American folk magic incorporating incantations, conjurations, herbal remedies and suchlike; | During the one and only scene where the origin of Hoodoo is discussed, Caroline's friend explains to her that it is part African, part Native American and part European. |
|---|
| The Village (2004) TH> | "Let us say that it takes place in an unspecified time and place, surrounded by a forest the characters never enter. The clothing of the characters and the absence of cars and telephones and suchlike suggest either the 1890s, or an Amish community. | During a funeral at the very beginning of the film, the gravestone of the child being buried is shown, and the time is thus identified as the late 1800s. |
|---|
| Willow (1988) TH> | "The baby was carried to Willow's land on a crude raft that was swept along by river waters, but what Willow does not know is that the baby was placed on the raft by her desperate mother. | No, the baby was placed on the raft by the midwife who the mother convinced to rescue and look after the baby. |
|---|
| Willow (1988) TH> | "Madmartigan convinces Willow to free him, using much too much dialogue in the process, and then they team up to continue their quest | Willow frees him and gives him the baby, so that Willow can then return home thinking his mission is over. However, he quickly sees that the baby has been stolen from Madmartigan and goes to rescue the baby. A few scenes later, he crosses paths with Masmartigan again, and they do eventually team up. |
