1.        What is the Sept Wm. Doran?

The Sept Wm. Doran originated in the 1830s and 1840s in Brookline, Mass. It is a sept of the main Doran Clan. Today, it values its traditions and heritage, and is proud of its roots. It vows to preserve its rich history in every possible way. For more information, see the "About" section, on the
Home Page.

2.        What is the origin of the name "Sept Wm. Doran" ?

Back when S. Levi Doran, the Sept's historian, was first contemplating writing a family genealogy, he was struck with a problem. If he were to write a "History of the Doran Family," than he would technically be writing a history of all the Dorans in the world, not just his close relatives. It was around then that he first discovered the term "sept." Sept is a genealogical term, usually used in Scottish and Irish genealogy. It basically means a division or branch of a family or clan. He applied it to the situation at hand, and came up with the "Sept Wm. Doran." This name refers specifically to the division of the Doran Clan descended from William. In other words, specifically and only descendants of William.
The Sept was chosen to start with William because it was he who immigrated to America, thus starting a completely new life and family.

3.        Does the Sept have any gatherings or meetings?

Yes. Occasionally we will have reunions / gatherings, though not that often. If we are going to have one, we will post information about it online at the
Current Events site several months in advance.

4.        Who is in charge of the Sept? Is there a "leader" ?

There is a Chieftain of the Sept. He is currently Chieftain Peter R. Doran, 5th generation of the Sept. For more information, visit the Chieftain page.
