The Sept Wm. Doran
"A Note on Chieftains"

By S. Levi Doran

Back in the days of the Seven Septs of Leix, Chieftains were an important part of a clan. They were leaders in times of trouble; they were mentors; they were the decision makers for the family. Nowadays, they are more leaders of tradition and heritage. They are still decision makers, but now for the family's history and how it will be celebrated and preserved.

Back in the summer of 2006, it came to my attention that we had gone on without a recognized Chieftain of our sept of the Doran Clan. I traced back through the years as best I could, and came to the conclusion that Peter R. Doran, of the fifth generation, was the rightful Chieftain of the Sept Wm. Doran.

However, if a living descendant of Alfred Doran, late of Waltham, Massachusetts, is discovered and that person is in accordance with the rules, than a challenge will most likely be issued by Peter, and he will not give up without a fight for as he said in one email to the author, "The Chieftain doesn't step down or back away. He steps up or forward."

Let us all celebrate Peter's appointment. He will undoubtedly be a first-class Chieftain for this Sept. He is interested in and concerned with our history and genealogy; he is all for tradition and preservation.
