| It is exciting to finally participate in the development of an organized effort to capture, record, organize and present genealogical information, photographs and general family history about the Sept Wm. Doran. As the eldest known living male descendant of William Doran I have been charged with the responsibilities associated with role of Chieftain in the Sept Wm. Doran. While I was growing up I was always aware of collections of photographs tucked in bureau drawers or tied in boxes in the attic. Bundles of letters, family Bibles, and assorted newspaper articles and memorabilia were tucked safely here and there. The material was always fun to look through on a rainy day but no thought was ever given to tying it all together in a family history. Several events triggered our history project. First and foremost is the interest and ability of the Sept Historian, S. Levi Doran. Sam's developing academic research skills have been put to good use as he has taken over this project. Second, the gift of genealogy software was very timely allowing for a quick start in organizing what information we had readily available. Thirdly, Ruth Doran's desire to "turn out" all the Doran family material she had stored away. The excitement of tying photographs of real people to references in the family tree has been rewarding. We have many leads to follow up. Who is Charles Doran who settled in Illinois, and some of whose papers were found among family items? Why did Alfred Doran drift away from the family while living close by in the next town? When did William Doran leave the Isle of Man and immigrate to Massachusetts? When did the Dorans migrate from what had been their ancient home since the end of the 2nd Century A.D., in Leix (now Laois), Ireland? We hope the answers to all these questions and other family mysteries will be revealed in good time. Sam has many plans; a family newsletter, a website, a research trip(s) to the Isle of Man and Scotland, and family gatherings. Much will be revealed via website and newsletter in the months ahead. Everyone is welcome to contribute and participate as this history and project evolves. This project is very much about the Sept Wm. Doran's Present activities as it is about the Sept's Past history. - Peter R. Doran Chieftain |
