In agreement with EMBS Advisory Committee and following the feeling of all European Marine Biologists, I have decided to cancel the 35th EMBS scheduled for 18-22 September 2000 in Sevastopol (IBSS) because the case of Prof. Piontkovski is not yet positively solved.
No other meeting will be organized this year, so that cancellation of the 35th will remain in the history of EMBS.
I am very sorry for Prof. Shulman and Prof. Tokarev, who have so strongly worked to have an EMBS in Crimea, but that is now not possible because European researchers wish to give a strong and clear message of their disappointment and unhappiness about the incredible story of Prof. Piontkovski.
I hope very much that circumstances in the next few years will make it acceptable and possible for IBSS to fulfil their wish to organize an EMBS in Crimea.
