Be Like Christ

Luke 10

25

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

26

"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"

27

He answered: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, `Love your neighbor as yourself.’"

28

"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."

29

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30

In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.

31

A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.

32

So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

33

But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.

34

He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.

35

The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. `Look after him,' he said, `and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

36

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"

37

The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

I know if Jesus were in this situation, He would have stopped to help the man.  He would have stopped to help the man because He loves people.  Jesus illustrates a point to the expert in the law:  always help others no matter what the cost may be.

When a person chooses to become a Christian, he/she is also choosing to imitate Christ.

In studying scripture, I find the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John) are the best interpretation of Jesus’ life on earth.  Through them, I have learned Jesus is God’s son, was accredited by God to do miracles, was put to death by being nailed to a cross, and on the third day, He rose again.  Jesus is God (as man) on earth.  This concept is known as the Trinity: God (Father), Jesus (Son), and the Holy Spirit all work together as one triune God.

Furthermore, in studying scripture, I have learned Jesus had a specific purpose God gave Him while He lived His life on earth.  This purpose was to preach the gospel of salvation and die for our sins.

This is how you may love people:

1)      When someone hits you, do not hit them back

2)      When someone curses you off, do not curse them off back

3)      Pray for the people that hate you

4)      Do good to those that do bad to you

5)      Give to the needy with a loving heart

6)      Do not judge people for the “good” or “bad” things that they have done

7)      Do not condemn, but only offer love

8)      Do not judge, but only offer love

9)      Forgive people always

10)  Let other people go first before you do

11)  Love your neighbor (friend, acquaintance, family member, teacher, someone who hates you, etc.) as yourself

12)  Humble yourself

13)  Do not lie

14)  Do not steal

15)  Do not be abusive

16)  Do not be controlling

17)  Treat others the way you would want them to treat you

18)  Do not murder people

19)  Do not commit adultery

20)  Do not shun evil people

This is how you may love God:

1)      Follow His commands (love God with all your heart, soul, and mind; love your neighbor as yourself)

·        Examples of God’s commands:

1.      Be meek

2.      Search for righteousness

3.      Show mercy

4.      Be pure in heart

5.      Be a peacemaker

6.      Be salt (witness) to other people

7.      Not to be greedy with your possessions

8.      Do not blasphemy the name of God

9.      To deny yourself and take up God’s cross daily (follow God always)

10.  Repent of your sins

This is how you may preach the gospel:

1)      Show others you love Jesus by the way you act

2)      Show others you love Jesus by the way you talk

3)      Show others you love Jesus by the way you reason through situations

4)      Talk the talk, and walk the talk (don’t be a hypocrite Christian)

5)      Love your neighbor as yourself

6)      Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind

  • This is my challenge for you: love others like Christ loves you.
