Human Touch - Continued
Hand over fist, paper around the stone,
Scissors cut the paper, cut the paper to the bone.

Lina watched fromt he hiding place in the woods.  Her jaw hit the ground when she saw Zelgadis actually shake that drunkard's hand.  But as the man staggered off, she saw Zel stand for a moment, shake his head and sigh.  He sighed as if letting go of something heavy.  He turned and walked away into the woods.

Hand over hand doesn't seem so much
Hand over hand is the strength of the common touch.

Running, Lina jsut managed to beat Zelgadis back to the inn.  She scurried upstairs and ducked into her room in time.  She heard Zelgadis come up the stairs, and reopened her door to catch him in the hall.
Stopping, Zelgadis regarded her calmly.  "Yes, Lina?"
"Zel, are you OK?  What's bothering you?" she asked.
"Nothing."  Then he shrugged.  "Well, nothing much anymore."
"Huh?"  Lina gave him a confused look.
Zelgadis jsut smiled slightly at her.  "Good night, Lina."  And he went down the hall to his room.
Lina backed into her own room and shut the door.  It didn't look like he'd ever tell her what the problem was, but it seemed to have gone away.  She hadn't seen him smile like that in, well, over a year.  Climbing into bed, she wished she'd been able to hear his conversations with the drunk, but whatever was said seemed to have helped.
In his room, Zelgadis paused to look out at the moon.  He felt better about his friendships with Lina and Gourry and Amelia.  Maybe it is OK to care, he thought.  Maybe caring will make life easier rather than harder.  As he got into bed, he made a mental note to apologize to Amelia in the morning.
