Flirting by Jess_Lovecat
Monster Side by Addict

Zelgadis kept to himself all day. He was lost in thought about finding a cure. As always. He found himself matching steps with Lina. Maybe he hoped she could cheer him up. Maybe he hoped- What was that? He glanced at the side of the road. Mazuko.

I am young, but a fool
I am stupid but I'm cool
I am kind, but I'm weak
I can turn the other cheek
All I wanted was to find a friend again, again

Lina must have sensed them too. She winked at Zel before calling out a challenge to teh mazuko, "We know you're there. Come out, come out, wherever you are!"

If I had another chance
I would peacefully advance
But as I'm fated to be here
Resigned and ridden by my fear
I should love myself but
My vanity loves someone else

Zelgadis battled a few of the mazuko, keeping Lina within view. She was acting might cocky and it could be used against her. Sure enough, one mazuko was trying to sneak up on her. Zel fried it. Lina, surprised by the close explosion, spun to see Zel's sardonic look. She just grinned back.

I just can't hide my monster side, my monster side
I can't control the loss I feel, the loss I feel

Zel had been anxious to make camp that night; he wanted to examine some manuscripts they'd found earlier. He sipped his tea and set to the arduous task of translating them in his head. The sad, suffering shaman sat at the fire all night. The manuscripts were worthless to him.

I am the best there is
Until all there is
Is hot air
Unfulfilled I take it out on you
Because you care
And because I love you
I expect you to be there

When morning came and Lina appeared, Zel was silently screaming for her to help him. But he was lost in his own sorrow, unable to voice it. She walked up next to him, "Nothing?" "Nothing. Here, if you want them, they're yours." Zel offered her the pages, finally looking up at her.

"I'm sorry, Zel. But maybe the next one, right?" Zelgadis was a tad stupified by Lina. The morning sun rose behind her, creating a fiery halo around her face. He closed his eyes for a moment then gave her a tiny smile. "Maybe." Zel suddenly noticed that she looked different, and it wasn't just the sun turning her into a goddess. "New look for you, huh?"

With a grin, Lina assumed a flirty, confident pose. "Well, different. You like?" Zel sat perfectly still. Was she flirting with him? He gave himself a mental shake, "It's... Very becoming." "Thanks!" she answered with a wink. If only Zel was normal. Then he might be worthy of her effort. "That's me, the wonderful, beautiful, Lina Inverse!"

I just can't hide my monster side, my monster side
I can't control the loss I feel, the loss I feel

I can't abide my monster side, my monster side
But it's an animal I just can't ride, I just can't ride

Zelgadis blushed. Lina didn't care how he looked - she never had. "Um, yeah. Beautiful." Lina's smirk became a true grin. Despite his blush, Zel smiled back. When she sat down next to him, Zelgadis felt his heart race. They kept glancing at each other and smiling. He'd always counted on her to cheer him up or at least occupy his thoughts with something else.

Zel was unable to look away as Lina got up and walked towards the stream. The petite, fiery-tempered, powerful, gorgeous sorceress had been trying to tell him something. Funny how even with your eyes open, you don't see everything...

(Author's Notes:  First songfic I've ever written. Be gentle... Also, the story actually negates the end of the song... Artistic license... Sue me!)
