A Gawtribe Squirrel with a Heart of Gold
Jewel Wavebattle
Nicola ran through the woods. She knew she would never go back. She still
couldn't believe it. It was an impossibility. But she knew it was true. Her
black fur, the fierceness of her relatives, her mothers fear of owls. They
all pointed towards one conclusion, and it was one she didn't like. She was
the daughter of a gawtribe squirrel.
***
After a month of traveling, Nicola noticed the pine trees of the north thin
out into elms, oaks, and birch. She found a path, but decided not to follow
it. Instead she continued along the canopy of the woods. As she set down to
eat one day, she heard giggles from below. As she looked down out of the
trees, she saw another squirrel looking up at her. This one was young
though, a dibbun. "Hello there. Whatta you name?" said Nicola, her gawtribe
accent standing out more than she wished. "I am Samantha. My daddies name is
Sam. He say I talk too much heeheehee."
Well Samantha, where do you live?"
"De Habbey I take you there if you want."
Sure, lets go.
***
As Samantha and Nicola walked toward the abbey, a ferret jumped out. Nicola
didn't even realize what she was doing until she felt a scratch against her
shoulder. She was fighting a ferret twice as big as her with her big paws;
and winning! As the fight went on, Nicola realized she was losing, and told
Samantha to get away as fast as possible. But then, A ghostlike figure with
a glowing sword came out of the woods. Just as the ferret was about to make
the killing blow, the mouse with the sword took a strike at the ferret, and
killed him. Nicola passed out, and awakened in the abbey infirmary,
surrounded by the brothers and sisters of redwall, all of which asked her to
take the honored position of abbey warrior. She accepted, and realized that
any creature, whether gawtribe, mouse or ferret, is capable of good deeds.
