Elijah vs. Snowflower

Winner: Elijah

Prologue
Strongpaw

"A new battle contest is about to begin! Snowflower, using a dagger and unstrung bow used as stave, will battle with Elijah, who will use a short sword, hunting knife, and long wooden staff. Make sure you read the rules. You have ten moves each. You may begin when ready."

Prologue
Snowflower

Snowflower steps into the Battle Ring. Her bow already unstrung, she holds it out in a defensive position and draws her dagger in her left paw.
Crouching in a "ready" position, the mousemaid calls over to her opponent.
"Ready when you are, Elijah."

Prologue
Elijah

Elijah strides into the ring, surprisingly cheerful. He is hefting his staff across his broad shoulders. He smiles at Snowflower, then draws his sword with his right paw and holds his staff diagonally across his body in his left. His dagger is sheathed and hanging on his belt. He bends his knees slightly, placing his right foot behind his left. Cracking his neck, the badger nods at the smaller fieldmouse. He has decided that he will try not to harm her badly, but will by no means go easier on her.
"I'm ready, then."

Prologue
Snowflower

Snowflower returns the smile, not wishing to be too serious with a Battle Contest, especially against a friend.
Nevertheless, the mousemaid eyes her opponent carefully, trying to pick out a weakness.
"Well, if you're so ready, why don't you take the first move?"

Move #1
Elijah

Elijah doesn't respond - at least not with words. With as much speed as he can muster with his heavy frame, he lunges forward into her space, slashing straight across Snowflower's middle with his sword - from his left to his right, in a backhand stroke. He is, of course, prepared to turn his blade so the flat of it hits her, if the attack gets through. Simultaneously he lifts his staff above his head and swings it straight down at the mouse's skull, not aiming to bash so much as distract.

Move #1
Snowflower

Snowflower moves her paws out of the way and bends forward, bringing her torso out of the path of Elijah's sword. She takes the blow from the staff on the back, and, using the momentum gained from the blow, falls to her knees. Holding her bow above her head to block any more blows, she moves to slap at the badger's right footpaw with the flat of her dagger.

Move #2
Elijah

Elijah lifts his footpaw, dodging the dagger but actually receiving the slap on his left footpaw instead as it barely misses its original target. He manages to hold his balance though, and in the same motion of moving his footpaw he pivots in on his left footpaw and aims a swift kick at Snowflower's shoulder, hooking her bow from underneath with his staff and attempting to flip it out of her hands. The added momentum from the pivot adds some power and speed to his kick as well as to the disarming move with his staff.
However, standing on one foot only, Elijah could be easily knocked off balance, though he purposely bends his knee and sinks his weight into the ground to counter that.

Move #2
Snowflower

Snowflower takes the kick in her stomach, and her bow is knocked out of her paws. However, the kick sends her rolling, and she converts her poxition into a somersault and gets back on her footpaws. She charges toward Elijah, picking up her bow on the way, and moves to whack his side with the bow.

Move #3
Elijah

Elijah pulls his staff back as soon as he knocks the bow out of Snowflower's hand and balances his himself on both paws. He readies himself for Snowflower's next move as best he can in the limited time he has.
The badger tries to move back as she rushes in, but is partly jammed by her fierce attack. In his limited space, he manages to knock her bow away with his staff in an awkward parry. As he has been taught by his father, he pushes her weapon back and widens his stance, hoping to sustain his balance throughout the rest of the fight.

Move #3
Snowflower

Still a little disoriented after the roll, Snowflower stumbles a bit when Elijah parries.
Regaining her stance, she pushes back on her weapon as well, to prevent the awkward circumstance of being pushed over.

Move #4
Elijah

Now that they are in something of a lock, Elijah's mind works quickly. He allows them to hold it for a second, bow against staff, then suddenly shifts, pulling his staff away as quickly as possible and sidestepping. He quickly sheathes his sword in the brief moment of disorientation, placing both hands on his staff.
The badger readies himself for the next attack, playing the defensive now but hoping to attack more fiercely later now that he had two paws to bring more power to his single weapon.

Move #4
Snowflower

Snowflower stumbles a bit whe Elijah pulls away, but manages to remain on her footpaws. She imitates Elijah, quickly sheathing her dagger and putting both paws on her bow.
Since a mouse does not simply attack a badger who is sturdily on the defensive, Snowflower hangs back, assuming a defensive position as well.

Move #5
Elijah

Elijah takes advantage of this. He pulls his staff back so that his right paw is holding the back end of it above his head, and his left paw is grasping the front end at around shoulder height. In a quick lunge he sticks his let footpaw in between her footpaws and pulls forward, slamming her in the chest hard with his left shoulder, hoping to knock her off balance. He also pushes forward with his staff, letting his front paw slide a little back and poking her hard in the shoulder.

Move #5
Snowflower

Snowflower, quite simply, gets the wind knocked out of her for a moment, and falls to her knees.
Taking advantage of her position, she swiftly lets go of her bow with one paw and places it behind Elijah's leg. Grabbing it once more with the one paw, she jerks back on the bow as hard as she can, hoping to pull the badger's leg out from under him.

Move #6
Elijah

Elijah slips and falls as his leg is swept out from under him, his back leg collapsing and landing him in a rather uncomfortable and disadvantageous position, with his left leg splayed out in front of him and his right leg folded underneath him. The badger grunts in surprise as he falls but moves almost as soon as he hits the ground, wasting no time.
Pulling his left leg into him so that the knee is up against his chest, he changes to a crouching position, alert and on his toes. Gripping his staff in the middle of its length in his right paw, so that it is horizontal and parallel to the ground, he jumps forward and swings the staff across at Snowflower, hoping to catch her in the face with the end of the weapon.

Move #6
Snowflower

Snowflower, still panting to recover her breath from being winded, has no time to struggle to her feet before Elijah attacks again. She ducks slightly as the badger swings his staff as her, gasping as it hits her ear.
Placing both paws on one end of her bow, the mousemaid swings it toward Elijah's right paw, hoping to get him to release his staff.

Move #7
Elijah

The end of the bow catches Elijah's paw with a crack. The badger's grip on his staff is loosened, and it slips down, out of his control, the end thudding into the ground. His paw still stinging, Elijah pulls his staff up as quickly as he can and aims a series of swift blows at Snowflower's neck and chest, the pain driving him to hit faster and harder, but with less accuracy and control.

Move #7
Snowflower

Regaining her breath, Snowflower stands and, gripping her bow with both paws in the middle, the front one facing upwards and the other down, does her best to fend off Elijah's attack.
At a point when she thinks that she can attempt a hit without receiving a hit, the mousemaid turns to the side and, in a lunge, thrusts one end of her bow toward the badger's shoulder.

Move #8
Elijah

Elijah, having lost control and awareness of his surroundings while performing the rapid-fire barrage of attacks, takes the hit, his shoulder jerking back slightly, causing him to sort of square up. He grimaces but regains the calmness he reserved earlier on.
He suddenly jumps and slides forward, driving his footpaw straight into her ankle, and at the same time bringing his staff up from underneath to poke her in the stomach, hard, almost as if he is trying to push straight through it.

Move #8
Snowflower

"Oof!" The mousemaid takes the blow in her stomach hard, and falls as she trips on Elijah's footpaw. She slowly sits up, and then puts herself into a crouch, holding her stomach with one paw and extending her bow in front of her with the other.
As quickly as she can, Snowflower attempts to return part of the favor, with a one-pawed whack at Elijah's ankle. She draws her dagger with her left paw, in case Elijah knocks her bow away from her, a likely circumstance with a one-pawed whack.

Move #9
Elijah

Elijah's footpaw slides out from underneath him, something he feared, and he almost stumbles, but places his staff on the ground to quickly right himself. He doesn't have enough time to stage a very effective attack, and instead just whips the staff up at Snowflower's chin quickly, a sort of quick forward sweep.
He also steadies himself by placing his footpaws in a more balanced position, vowing not to get knocked off balance again.

Move #9
Snowflower

Snowflower stands up, taking the hit to the chin, but not very hard, due to the fact that she was moving away from the staff when it hit. She crosses her dagger over her bow in a rough X, and takes a deep breath.
Suddenly, the mousemaid launches herself into a quick jump, trying to bring her bow and dagger into contact with Elijah's staff. She doesn't swing her weapons, nor does she jump very hard; she's merely using gravity to try to knock the staff out of the badger's paw.

Move #10
Elijah

Elijah's staff fits neatly in the X Snowflower's two weapons form. He pushes back, feeling her dagger make a shallow gash in his own wooden weapon.
He quickly releases pressure and sidesteps, receiving only a small nick in his tunic from his opponent's dagger. The badger holds his staff at the ready in case Snowflower is not prepared to stop, but he holds it up in a peaceful gesture and lowers his head slightly, though not his eyes.
"It was a good fight."

Move #10
Snowflower

Snowflower lands on her footpaws hard after Elijah's block, but steadies herself, and assumes a defensive posture.
Suddenly realizing that they're out of time, the mousemaid relaxes, and laughes merrily.
"Aye, a good fight indeed," she replies, bowing her head repectfully toward the badger.

Nice job you two.

A brave fight, but considering Snowflower was not very well equipped, she did very well and deserves to win.

Simply put, I thought Snowflower played to her advantages better (speed, agility, flexibility) than Elijah. On a more critical, RP-judge note, I was a little offput by Elijah's posts - he put a disconcerting amount of action into each one, which indicated either an incredible speed of attack (not so sure of that with a badger fighting with two heavy weapons at once) or assuming long pauses in Snowflower's movements. On both sides, I would've liked to see a little more willingness to remain in a weak position where plausible (not doing so reduces the realism significantly, since real fighters do watch for stumbles and disarms and seize upon those opportunities), but at the end of it all I thought Snowflower made a better show for herself by posting reasonable-length moves and assuming fewer hits to her opponent.

Elijah received some hard knocks, but being a badger, could more easily withstand them than a mouse. Snowflower needed to use her advantage of speed and agility to wear Elijah down.
