REVIEWS...comparison of Sailor Moon dubs, DIC, movies, etc.
Names Changed- There's more on this in Who's Who-

Haruna-sensei :Miss Haruna  --This was just translated.Sensei is a title used for teachers, and sometimes doctors, in Japan. Her love life was translated accurately too! ^_^

Umino Gurio: Melvin --I guess they had to make him seem dorky, but in the original, his voice was normal sounding. They had to exxagerate the nerd stereotype.

Furuhata Motoki: Andrew --Well, he's just your average guy working in an arcade. They just had to Americanize him and give him a teenybopper name. Geez, at least they didn't name him Corey!

Furuhata Unazuki: Lizzy/Elizabeth -- This one's interesting. In the Mixx, her name is a more accurate Una. On the TV show, it's different. The urge to Americanize strikes again!

Osaka Naru: Molly --Why Molly? Why the Chicago accent? WHY?!! They could have at least given her an "N" name. Like Nancy. ^_~ Oh well. That's just the way the world works, I guess.

Ail&Ann: Allan&Ann --In the Japanese version, their names were supposed to be a pun on the word "alien." But the translation is close enough.

Tsukino Family:Ikuko is Usagi's mother. In the dub, she simply becomes "Mom." It's the same with Kenji, Usagi's father. He just becomes "Daddy."
However, her  little brother, Shingo becomes "Sammy" so that she can scream threats and insults at him and vice-versa.

Princess Serenity: Princess Serena --OK, this was to keep young'uns from getting confused. They wanted everyone to be sure that Serena and Serenity were the same person. BUT THEY AREN'T EVEN CONSISTENT!!!

Prince Endymion: Prince Darien --This was done for the same reason as the one above, and they are consistent. But there's one thing. When Darien's being brainwashed, Queen Beryl says "Tell me who you are." He says he's Darien. After he's been brainwashed, Queen Beryl calls him "Prince Darien." But when Serena calls him Darien, he acts like he doesn't know what she's talking about! What's up with THAT?!

Kyusuke: Kelly -- Now, with the S and SuperS seasons,  they've been pretty consistent with the original names. But if they kept all of those, why couldn't they keep this one?

They've kept the same names of the Witches 5!! Oh, happy day!

They kept the names (though not the genders-fisheye) of the Amazon Trio!

Attacks Changed:

I don't have room for them all, so this'll be brief.

As most of us know, instead of the original attack name, which sounded cool and wasn't too corny, the producers decided to change them so it was planet-element-verb instead of the original attack name. Example:

Japanese-Supreme Thunder!
Dub- Jupiter Thunder Crash!           Now, which one sounds more stupid?

Transformations Changed:
Fortunately, the actual phrase wasn't changed, but the " Make UP!" part was eliminated. So that means that to get the dialogue to fit with the screen they have to

                       drrraaaaaaaaggg iiiiittt oooooouuuuuuuut!!

Movies:

Well, I can't say too much. Pioneer did an okay job.It was all translated fairly accurately, other than the 3 o'clock Mondays thing, but if you're used to the subbed version, the dubbed version is just kinda weird! Or vice versa! You find yourself saying stuff like
"Hey! They cut a scene!" and "She wasn't supposed to say THAT!" and possibly even "Hmph!......Original's better!"

It's kind of odd seeing (and hearing) it so different once you're used to seeing the subbed.
And when you're used to seeing the movies (or series) dubbed and you see the subbed for the first time, you may feel the urge to hit the mute button. The voices are VERY different! You may notice that scenes had been cut and edited for American (or any other country, but i'm on default here!) viewers. It's also weird seing the edited versions when you're not used to them. A lot gets cut.

Perhaps once you see the original version you'll like it better and hate the dub. Or perhaps you'll begin to love the dub even more and be glad it was changed. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion!
