1st children-ayanami rei
rei was a clone of shinji's mother, ikari yui. she was also somehow part angel. rei was a part of one of the ways to initiate the third impact. she seemed to have some kind of feelings for shinji, but this is probably because of the leftover motherly feelings of yui's. at one point, shinji actually tells her that he thinks she'd make a good mother. there were three rei clones used all total, although there were numerous others at nerv to be used for spares. it's been suggested that her soul is derived from lilith. she had yui's feelings that loved gendou, but also her own that hate him for the things he did with her.

2nd children-soryu asuka langley
asuka was 3/4 german and 1/4 japanese. she was a feisty genius and despite her young age had already completed college. her father abandoned her and her mother committed suicide when she was younger, but her mother had gone insane due to a failed eva synchronization test. her mom had a doll that she treated like asuka. before her mother hanged herself, she pulled the doll's head off to "take her asuka with her." this caused asuka to be a bit emotionally unstable, and she wanted to be completely independent. she had some kind of crush on kaji, and also possibly on shinji.

3rd children-ikari shinji
shinji was very self-conscious and under confident, and a bit shy. his mother "died" a long time ago and his father never liked him much so he was a little unsure of how to react to love. he was afraid to live but also afraid to die because he couldn't even kill himself. his state drastically improved by the end of the series which is proved by his decision to not merge with the rest of humanity. in the final state, there is no pain, but also no happiness. he serves as a metaphor for hideaki anno's mental state at the time of evangelion's creation.

4th children-suzuhara toji
toji was the closest thing shinji's school had to a jock. when shinji first came there, toji beat him up. he was one of shinji's only friends. he later became the 4th child and lost his left arm and leg when his eva was posessed by an angel and attacked by unit 01's dummy plug. he hated NERV and everything related to it at first because his sister was injured in an angel attack. he actually only agreed to be an eva pilot so that his sister would be transferred to the much better hospital in the geofront.

5th children-nagisa kaworu
kaworu was the 17th angel, tabris, in addition to being the 5th child. he was sent directly to NERV to replace asuka by keel lorenz in an attempt to start the 3rd impact. as he was an angel, shinji had to kill him, even though he was the first person to teach shinji how wonderful life really was. kaworu was born on the exact date of the 2nd impact (sept. 13 2000) and his name means "kaworu of the seashore" (the 2nd impact caused the polar ice cap to melt and raised the ocean level, drowning much of humanity and increasing the size of the sea). he was used as the dummy plug for eva units 5-13, exploited even after his death by lorenz. his eyes were always filled with pity for humanity.

major katsuragi misato
the caregiver of shinji, asuka and pen pen. she always wore a cross pendant that was her father's because he perished during the 2nd impact after saving her life. she had a scar on her chest from this incident. she was the only survivor of a mission the was at the south pole at the time of the 2nd impact. she was a little unstable because all the men in her life had abandoned her. she had always had a confusing relationship with her father, which was worsened by his dying for her.

commander ikari gendou
head of NERV, shinji's estranged father and longtime "friend" of fuyutsuki. he created NERV and rei. rei was created as a replacement for yui after she died. he became a bit unstable and cold after her death. both of the akagis slept with him. ::shudder:: he actually wanted to start the 3rd impact so that he could reunited with yui. he had stepped on people whenever he needed to, but the only time he ever expressed regret was just before the world ended when he apologized to shinji.
