2000-2001
The 2000-01 Ottawa Senators broke a club-record for points, as they finished with 109 pts.  They had the 4th best record in the NHL, behind Colorado, New Jersey, and Detroit.  They captured their 2nd North-East Division title in 3 seasons.  The team won a club-record 26 games at home, and had the 3rd best home record in the NHL.  The team averaged close to 18,000 fans per game at home and had a team record 18 sellouts.  Ottawa also set a team record for goals in a season with 274, and Alexei Yashin, who sat out the 1999-2000 season due to a contract dispute, scored 40 goals to lead the way.  In the playoffs, the Senators faced the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2nd consectutive season.  After sweeping the season series from the Leafs 5 games to 0, the Leafs returned the favour and shut out the Senators in the 2 games played in the Corel Centre.  In game 3, it looked like Toronto was on the way to another shut-out win, but Ottawa scored 2 goals late in the game to send it to overtime.  The Leafs won the game, and swept the series 4-0.  Ottawa was known as a "soft-team" with no grit, but during the off-season in 2001, the team addressed these needs by trading Yashin to NY for Zdeno Chara and Bill Muckalt.
