1999-2000
The 1999-2000 Ottawa Senators were without Alexei Yashin for the entire season as he elected to sit out the season due to a contract dispute.  It opened the door for Radek Bonk as he and Daniel Alfredsson became the teams offensive leaders.  The Senators finished the season as the 6th seed and faced the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs, and lost the series 4 games to 2.  Before the season in an unusual deal, the team acquired Rob Zaumner for the Lightning for GM Rick Dudley.  At the trading deadline, the Sens traded fan favourite Ron Tugnutt and Janne Laukkanen to the Penguins for Tom Barrasso because of his playoff experience, but despite his great play, the Sens failed to advance.  Ottawa led the NHL with an 89.6% penalty-killing on the road as they allowed only 19 goals in 134 penalty-killing situations.  The team finished under .500 on the road (17-18-6-0) for the first time since 1997-98.  The Senators set a team record for most goals in a season despite the loss of Yashin and Alfredsson missing 24 games due to injuries.  They had a balanced team with no real weakness as everyone did their job, but ran into a hot Curtis Joseph in the playoffs.
