1998-1999
The 1998-99 edition of the Ottawa Senators had the best regular season in club history, finishing off over 100 points for the first time.  Ottawa finished 22-11-8 at the Corel Centre and sold out a club record 16 games.  The team was 2nd in the Eastern Conference and were favourites to beat Buffalo in the playoffs, but the Sabres, with Dominik Hasek playing the best hockey of his career, defeated the Senators in 4 straight games.  Many fans felt the team lost due to their lack of toughness, as evidenced in the regular season when Ottawa was the least penalized team in the league.  Jacques Martin won the Jack Adams Trophy for best coach in the league, as he led the Senators, a team with one of the lowest payrolls in the NHL to 1st place in the Northeast Division.  The goaltending duo of Ron Tugnutt and Damian Rhodes was again one of the best in the NHL.  On April 15th, 1999, the city of Ottawa became the last Canadian city that Wayne Gretzky would ever play in while being in the NHL, as the New York Rangers star announced his retirement while in Ottawa.  Wayne Gretzky was given a standing ovation in front of the sold out Corel Centre crowd at the end of the Senators-Rangers game, which ended in a tie.  Gretzky was named the 1st star of the game.
