Notes for a Sociological
Study of the
Vampires in Laramie,
Wyoming
Laramie has a small but
surprisingly active vampire community. Due to isolation, they
have divided into several unusual subgroups. They include:
The Beats
The Beats congregate at
a club called the Cave-In. They tend to be a rather existential
lot, caring nothing for their past or future.
The Art Crowd
The Art Crowd, though
a small group, can be quite sophisticated and are known for live
performances staged for an unsuspecting audience.
The Veggies
The Veggies are convinced
they can live a lifestyle consistent with their philosophy - including
vegetarianism. They swear they feed strictly on tomatoes and blood
oranges. We have seen and heard nothing to the contrary.
The Lestats
A few vampires say Anne
Rice is their spiritual historian. Only she know s the truth and
understands them.
The Good Ole Boys
There are, of course,
Good Ole Boys. Being a rather solitary bunch, they have come to
supplement their diet with beer (Dixie by choice) and the blood
of the cattle they tend.
The New Agers
The New Agers (a.k.a.
Crystal Suckers) believe sustenance can be derived directly from
specially charged crystal, though the method of charging is a
strictly guarded secret. This has lead to wild rumors of blood
sacrifice and more among the other vampire groups.
The Friedans
There are two female vampires
who insist that the only victims worth taking are older, white,
politically conservative males.
The final photograph is
rather touching. The vampire community in Laramie is a very young
one, having been established in the 1950's. There were, however,
a very few older vampires who arrived in the Laramie valley in
the 1800's. The skulls in this photograph commemorate the extremely
harsh winter which struck the valley in 1857. The 13 vampires
in the valley at the time dwindled down to one due to exposure
and cannibalism (for lack of a better word). The skulls are all
that remain of the last vampire and his final meal.
