OLYMPIAN FALL CLASSIC 2000

Tournament report: September 23, 2000

The tournament was started off by a demo put on by the Olympic Taekwondo Demo team. It was very well organized demo, which started off with some forms being performed in a synchronized manner. There was also some self defense situations displayed in a similar manner and some impressive board breaks. The high light of the demo was some of the self-defense situations, which would have been suitable to put on any Mortal Combat like movie; it was a very impressive, well-organized demo.

The colored belt competition went on with out a hitch with some excellent action.

The Black Belt competition was fantastic with many Junior and Senior Nationally competitive fighters. Josee Leblanc of New Brunswick was one of the fighters on note. (Canadian Junior National Champion)

Annick Pannequin of St.Peter’s Taekwondo fought in her first black belt competition and fought incredibly hard and very bravely. She had a bye in the first round; she then had a very exciting match. The first round was slow paced with some well-placed kicks. Annick hit with an axe kick and her opponent hit with 2 front leg round kicks to the body, after the first round annick was down 2-1.

She came out very aggressively in the second round hitting with 2 more axe kicks before being hit with a nice counter back kick that took some of her wind, she ended up losing the match but fought an incredibly for her first match at the black belt level.

The board break competition was started off with an incredible performance by a black belt nick named shorty (he’s around 4’8 I would estimate) he had an incredible vertical leap which I estimate at around 4 ft. because he could leap up and reach the mesh of a regulation basketball net. He did 3 high flying board breaks (clean round) and won the gold.

Annick Pannequin from our St.Peter’s school also competed in the board break competition and completed a perfectly clean round winning the silver.

It was an excellent tournament, which I am eager to see again next year!!!
