When will
this new hot game be released??? June '98? Or sometime in '99 or now even
2000? Like Final Fantasy VII, this game came a very long way since the
original Duke Nukem. As of now, 6/23/99, it has been just about 19 months.
It is created by the Quake II engine. There have been some set backs like
using the Unreal Engine and hyping it up too early. The compatibility of
both engines isn't great. It takes place in Las Vegas (a strip mall), the
Hoover Dam, Area 51, Morningwood Arizona, and the Grand Canyon. Rumors
say he will have the ability to ride a Harley Davidson, other vechicles
(a Humvee, jet ski, jetfighter), and fly without a jetpack. An ally in the
game will be a woman named Bombshell. She is supposed to be under Dr. Proton's
command, but he somehow gets her to help him. He thinks she is a lesi because
she isn't attracted to him, but it's unknown. She probably can be used
in multi-player games. 10 weapons are supposed to be put in the game. Only
4 are named: shotgun w. a mounted flashlight, The Ripper (chaingun), rocket
launcher, and his mighty foot. The Pig Cops will return as part of a military
from Duke3d. And they said they'll make the strippers and other humans
as real as they can this time ; ). "All human characters in the game will
be motion captured, for unsurpassed realism." George Broussard, 3d Realms
President

The long
awaited screen shots are finally here!!! Check out what the game really
looks like...if not already seen in PC-Gamer or other magazines. In this
update, George Broussard tell us that he knows what we Duke fans want in the
game from the old Duke3d and other innovative ideas. "We're definately keeping
that mindset in DNF. You need variety in weapons. You need in your face blasting
action, but also the ability to be sneaky and set traps (ala pipe bombs and laser
trip mines -- both replicated verbatim in Half Life BTW :)). If every single gun
is designed for a straight up in your face fight you end up with very one dimensioanl
DeathMath like "get gun...kill guy". That's great, but add to that the ability to be
sneaky and stealthy and you have a whole new dimension of gameplay and fun."
Duff's Beer: "Hey guys,
how about putting a CHAINSAW in duke 4 so's I can enjoy alittle alcoholicly
induced godmoded ownage over the *?^$@!!!! as I was able to do in Doom?"
Broussard: "Wait
for the screen shots ;) We know what you want ;)"
Duff's Beer:
"and oh make sure to include The Stadium map or a version of it in your final game.. hehe
that's the best multiplayer deathmatch mayhem..."
Broussard:
"Noted. Once again we know what you want. Seems it'd be stupid to release
DNF and NOT have some of the favorite DM maps appear in an updated form.
We'll also have plenty of new maps for you as well. The hard part will be
selecting the old favorites, although a few are obvious."

Lets try to keep this
concise...New facts on the game:
Wherever the enemy is shot is
where he is hurt...shot in the crotch..'HOLDING' his crotch...INSTANT DEATH!
Duke Forever is probably 5 - 10
times more complex than Duke3d
Game will definately come with
complete editing programs/engines

DNF will
some sort of in-air control jumping movements. There will be about 20 or
more levels for the game in the final version. Megadeth will most likely
have the honor of doing the Duke theme song. But hey, decisions like that
can change. Right now there are samples of the song at www.duke4.com in
various formats just to give a hint of what it may be like. Here's the
rest of the list of songs that are on the cd that's out for the game:
Streaming .wavs or
possibly mp3s are the way to go for gaming music. Avi's is another format
that the team will be using for their videos and movies.

Guess
what guys (especially the deathmatch group)...DNF will NOT support modem
to modem play. It will be purely internet/server connections only. Of course
I do not agree with that, but I have no say. The DNF team says that the
game is not made for such simple play. It was created for such as other
recent games for internet play. Most people have the internet anyway. If
they did make it also modem play, the entire game would pretty much start
from scratch. The game can set up user created servers just for 1 on 1
if desired. *Map editors will love the new DukeED based on UnrealED.
A big
question that has been asked is "Why is this game taking so long to make???"
Answer given by the DNF team: " Um fellas, We started DNF approx Jan 1,
1998. That puts us at approx 18 months of development. Where is the big
delay guys? Until Jan, we did not even have the Quake 2 engine. We did
not have our final team including a coder, 2 modellers and 3 mappers. We
worked 4 1/2 months and made an awesome demo for E3 that blew people away.
Then we switched to the Unreal engine for obvious reasons. Since then,
we have made steady progress. I think you guys worked yourselves into a
frenzy too early for the game and now you are blaming us. The fact is that
we're not massively delayed. Going to Unreal did set us back, but mainly
because we refused to be a TC and not advance tech. We added LOD, skeletal
animation, motion capture, and tons of other little enhancements to the
Unreal engine to make it more interactive. That all takes time. Exactly
what is your problem with us being 18 months into a game of this magnitude
and not being done? Games like this take upwards of 2 years to make (read
Half Life and Duke 3D). We do not make clones. We do not make 12 month
games. Get used to it, or move on. The die hard fans will be rewarded for
their patience. The people that have no idea will be pleased when the game
magically appears. You guys bitching about lack of shots and delays are
in the severe minorty here. The bottom line is that you are worrying and
bitching for nothing. We are not releasing shots because we don't want
to. It's too early. Things might change. We don't want to overhype the
game too early or show people what we are doing. What's wrong with that?
Nothing."

New weapons
other than the ones mentioned above are still not known (Top Secret), but
what they look like are another thing. Basically, what the 'Great and Powerful'
DNF Team's ideas are to make the weapons half realistic and half alienic
sci-fi. Both will be deadly to ANYTHING they are aimed at. "Duke is set
in the future, so he has access to higher tech weapons. But rest assured
that we will accomodate everyone with the guns. Real world, sci-fi, and
stealth weapons like pipe bombs and such for you sneaky, strategic bastards."
It is also said that the weapons will be more realistic and visual as can
be to the extent that the reloading and firing rate are not slow as balls
when in battle. All of a sudden you see your enemy/opponent. You hit the
firing key a few times rapidly, but you're stuck between frames. Kinda
screwed, eh? They have now created a Reloading Key so that will make life
a bit easier.
You guys
all know the 'Aliens have arrived. Gotta kill them without thinking routine'?
Well, there's going to be a strong storyline to it... similar to Quake
II, but 5X better. Tired of the same boring "Oh, it's over. I saved the
world. Now what?" ending? Expect a nice realistic surprise ending to the
story to end all stories. The game and YOU deserve it since DNF will be
the last Duke Nukem game to most likely to be made.
