| DAY 1: HUNTINGTON, WV / DINNER: We may see fall colors as we travel north-east to West Virginia and to our overnight accommodations in Huntington. A delicious dinner waits at our hotel. You may want to stroll along the majestic Ohio River through Harris Riverfront Park this evening. (D) DAY 2: FENTON ART GLASS / FERRY TO BLENNERHASSETT ISLAND / PICNIC LUNCH / TOUR BLENNERHASSET MANSION / WAGON TOUR OF ISLAND / DINNER AT BLENNERHASSET HOTEL / PARKERSBURG, VA: There is something for everyone at Fenton Art Glass; visit the museum with its collection of glassware dating back to 1905; watch as artisans produce beautiful hand-blown vases, and browse Fenton's showroom for the perfect collectibles. In Parkersburg we transfer by sternwheeler to Blennerhassett Island. After a boxed picnic lunch on the grounds, we will tour the island by horse-drawn wagons. Learn the details of the alleged Burr-Blennerhassett plott to become a Southwestern Empire. You'll discover the details of this plot as we tour the mansion. Our accommodations tonight are at the Blennerhasset Hotel. Dinner is included at this historic hotel. (BB,L,D) DAY 3: TAMARACK / COAL MINE TOUR / GREENBRIAR RESORT / DINNER & LODGING @ GREENBRIAR RESORT / WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV: Our motorcoach will travel the beautiful rolling hills of West Virginia to the mining town of Beckley. We'll stop at Tamarack, a place where you can find the best food and handmade treasures in West Virginia. When we take the guided coal mine tour, you'll hear the tales of men who once worked there. We'll continue on the beautiful roads of West Virginia to The Greenbriar , a world renowned five-star resort nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. The Greenbriar offers more than 50 activites, including three championship golf courses, a gallery of fine shops, and a host of amenities. Featured are spacious accommodations and world-renowned cuisines. We will all don our Sunday best before enjoying one of The Greenbriar's fine dinners. We will overnight at The Greenbriar. (BB,D) DAY 4: "PROJECT GREEK ISLE", A NUCLEAR WAR BUNKER FOR US CONGRESS / LEISURE TIME AT GREENBRIAR RESORT / DINNER @ GREENWAY HAVEN HOUSE / ABINGTON, VA: After a bountiful breakfast we depart on the Bunker Tour. A bunker 700 feet under the Greenbriar Resort was secretly built (1959-1962) for the protection of our Congressmen during the Cold War. The Washington Post revealed the secret in 1992, causing the shelter to officially close in 1995. The public can now tour the bunker and see the dormitories, decontamination rooms, hospital, and the power plant systems intended to keep the government humming in the event of war. After this tour there will be free time to browse the fine shops and take advantage of the resort's many amenities. We depart after lunch, making our way to Abingdon for the night. (BB,D) HOME: Reluctantly, we depart for home. What an adventure we have had-- from glass making to sternwheelers and a secret nuclear war bunker- from mansions on islands to coal mines in the mountains! You'll be eager to share pictures and stories of your wonderful West Virginia adventure with all your family and friends! (DCB) |
